Waratahs v Reds, Fri 9th May 7:35pm @ Allianz

Yeah it looked like he was trying to put a shot on. I love his aggression and intensity but he really needs to be more careful, for his own safety but also risking being penalised/carded. He loves that dogfight so much - if I’m the Lions I’m niggling him ala Swain a few years back.
He’s not as brain dead as Swain who will just do something dirty as part of the fight. JAS more likely to run over the top of you next run.

A lot of those stats with tackles and passes also would have built up early when the Tahs turned the Reds away on the try line.

Overall not a great game so the Reds will be glad to get away with the points. For the Tahs it’s a good hard showing at home again and I’m glad they didn’t get gapped in the 2nd half. It is a team on the improve who are stronger than this time last year.

Porecki and FLW (Fergus Lee-Warner) got through a lot of work for guys with no match fitness. 1 club game doesn’t do anything.

You confusing anyone? I’ll call it. God, I’ve said heaps of shit about Wright in past seasons or plenty of the Tahs.

I’ll have ago at people who do it in the Schools thread or about users on here but they aren’t paid to play the game we talk about.

they aren’t paid to play the game we talk about.

And neither are we. I have ,been less than impressed with Wright and Gleeson in the past, but happy to find they have improved, as I believe Swain has. This kind of atttack has kept him and Swinton out of the wallaby pack. Both Swain and Swinton have grown. Rugby is an aggressive game, without it you may as well play soccer. The other point is you increase the slimy act of niggling, ie punching disguised, holding players back and all the other crap that can happen in a game. I am talking about physical acts only.

stats are fairly favourably pointed to a Reds victory, the question is probably why they didn’t win by more

I feel like many of those stats mirror the difference in possession and number of players on the field (ie. Tahs 2 Yellows vs. Reds 1). You'd have to take a more nuanced look to gain some real insight.

The Waratahs coaching staff will be most unhappy with the lineout in particular. It's just too hard to set a platform an play territory if your tracking at 62.5%. That said, I also feel that Doleman let a few things slide in the lineout (to be frank the lineouts in SuperRugby this session have often been iffy which will be interesting come test time). There was one Reds turnover which looked like the Tahs players arm got played, but at the end of the day you play to the ref.

Tahs shouldn’t be happy with the lineout but like you say this year the lineout this year has been treated as a whatever get play going approach that I don’t think the refs in the Lions series will be so nonchalant about.

This game was a scrap and the better overall 23 got the W. Tries from Gordon and Tate indicated the style of game it was. Scores came from opportunities as opposed to built moments. Both were blowing those. Good sides probably don’t concede those types of tries.

I went back ands watched it again and - in fairness to Doleman - there was a fair bit happening at that ruck and, from where Doleman was standing, it very likely would have looked like Sua'ali'i's position in the ruck was the lever that tipped Canham.

What I don't understand is how the justification for it not being upgraded to red was "the player does not land very dangerously". Canham went beyond vertical and the only reason he didn't land on the top of his head was because he - probably to the elation of Matt Burke - 'fell safely' by tucking and rolling. Really hate how far into the territory of outcome-based punishment we've gone.
Where were the AR's then?

Where did you get that from? I can find nothing that points to any passes.

SMI you are getting hung up on irrelevant trivia. 3 passes from a 12 is not strong from my point of view, and I imagine we both would like to see more engagement from 12 to the outside backs.

stats are fairly favourably pointed to a Reds victory,

I am absolutely LOVING those scrum and lineout stats. Like, seriously, there is a 20 yo malt in the cupboard somewhere. Now is the time.

I don't think that stat is representative of the game though. Reds kept it in tight for the bulk of the first half, and Campbell stepped into the second-receiver role quite often when they started playing wider. Pakeho played his role.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a 12 only making 3 passes, particularly on a wet night when the Reds kept their focus narrow for much of the game. Aside from the conditions, Campbell (11 passes) is very much the "second playmaker" for the Reds (he made more passes than Lynagh (6) or HMP (9)) and they utilize the skills of their forwards for ball movement - Canham (10), Uru (6), and McReight (7) all have key roles in ball movement in phase play.

I’d imagine Kiss is very happy both with how Pakeho is going this season and how he played last night.

Absolutely. Doesn't mean that Dre isn't early in his career with plenty ahead of him. HE has gone very well this season.
