Waratahs 2022

Rugby Head

Donaldson is better at 10 than Harrison IMHO.
Agreed.
With no out and out fullback, we might be forced to play one of the two at fullback. I'd prefer the combo of Harrison the 10 and Donaldson at 15. Tahs should be inquiring about Tim Clements services, he has been an absolute standout for years in the Shute Shield.

Early last season I thought Harrison suffered from having Beale and Hunt kind of push him aside and do their thing. He was a rookie and they were vastly more experienced, but it undermined his role and a fair few times the opportunity would be squandered by KB (Kurtley Beale) or KH doing an all or nothing play. Harrison and Donaldson could work in tandem, as they have since they were kids. I’d like them at 10 and 15, assuming they’re both trustworthy under the high ball. Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase)? If he can harness the jumping power in his legs for defence, ouch. That’ll just require Tightening up his technique, upping his reading of the play and having the desire to smash people.

Yeah… but this is a rugby forum and that’s exactly why we’re all here
Yes. You’re right of course.... we all observe different things in players’ abilities and it is interesting to put your views to the forum... so play on....
I suppose what I was trying to say was that Coleman is a fair judge of talent and ability and a handy coach.... and he will live and die by his selections.
I reckon the Waratahs will go well under his guidance though.... definitely.
They only have to win one game and they are ahead of Rob Penney!

Donaldson is better at attacking the line himself, he seems to be able to find/make the gaps better where as Harrison tends to get swallowed up. But overall I prefer Harrison. His shoulder injury in the final minutes of the last trial puts Donaldson square in the 10 spot and it'll be tough for Harrison to re-claim it.

Even last year Harrison was dropping back to 15 a few times for others to come in at 10, before his injury. So I was expecting that to continue in 2022.

Ramm last season wasn't as good as the season before, but he was still OK on the wing. Nawaqanitawase had a great start to Super Rugby but has since been a shadow of himself. His performance in the trial didn't help. Nor did the performances of James Tuner and Tevita Funa both of whom impressed me. There's a lot of jokes & comments about Marky's insta photos, but they're mostly vanity muscles. What we really need to see is him finding his performance & abilities in attack again, while building defensive skills. Really hoping we see more from Mark in the next two trials, but if we don't, I'd be leaning towards having others in the squad ahead of him.
RA article Reminded me James Turner brought into super rugby tahs game in Auckland (was confusing him with Turner in oz sevens squad) where he had a shock or more could not step up. Latter just proved need time in pro environment before being exposed. Like to see him get a contract for one year to see how he could improve in pro environment as being thrown to the wolves from Shute shield showed not the right way to do it.

Coleman and the coaches will pick the best team and we’ll see what happens. We are all merely observers crapping on with our 2 cents worth at the end of the day..
But as fans aren't we all effectively assistant coaches with half the information and zero say? Hence all the discussion! :D

Penney has a pretty handy track record as a coach too outside of the Tahs. I hope that Coleman goes well and has all the right backing but time will tell. Definitely some good young backline talent there.

More news that Hooper won’t play till mid-season.
It makes sense. Japanese season,
+ international season + too many international caps in the last years. It a lost for Tahs, no doubts about it but it is the best decision for a long perspective to RA
