Are the Tahs and the NSWRU going to continue to be separate entities or is this just a failed experiment that will end when the contract runs out?

Less than 12 months ago, it appeared the chairman of the NSWRU wasn't too keen on the current arrangements which were set up before his time.

It must be getting close to when the NSWRU have to decide how to proceed since the licence expires in 2014. Unless there is genuine interest from private equity wanting to get involved, likely to see the Tahs brought back in house.

I wouldn't get overly concerned with who ends up where next season. The Tahs have been reasonably lucky with injury this season, next year who knows

We just need to get the best squad we can and roll the dice

The positives so far are that we are signing footballers, not physical giants, with no skills

Are you talking Skelton here because he looked good last week in the last few minutes on first look?

Him, dunno, I honestly haven't seen enough of him, but the Foley dynasty has left us with too many giants and not enough athletes. He got the mix wrong and it will take a while to get it right again.

You just have to look at the Kiwi sides to see what a forward should be, dynamic, athletic with a high accurate workrate. Units like the Timani brothers are nice, but they just don't do enough if you are looking to play an up tempo attacking game.

You want forwards that get a lot done accurately because sending too many into the breakdown limits the next attacking phase.

The wish list to me are the "Crusaders" type forwards, they get through a lot of work accurately, have solid ball skills and make great decisions in attack.

Jones to stay a Rebel

In other player news, the Rebels are expected to announce the re-signing of versatile forward Luke Jones in coming days. Melbourne have fended off interest from the Waratahs and Force to retain the promising youngster. He is not the only player expected to stay put. Despite overtures from the Force, indications are Test centre Rob Horne will stay in Sydney, where he has enjoyed a form resurgence at No.12.

Would have liked to score Jones to replace Timani, but I'll be happy if Horne stays instead.

In the context of rugby's challenging financial circumstances, Pulver's recent comments hinting Australia's top 25 players might have to settle for reduced salaries, that will be no mean feat.

Pulver said the ARU understood Folau's worth on and off the field. ''I'm not hiding from the fact that I think he's a great player and has great potential for rugby in the future,'' he said. ''Robbie Deans has said exactly the same, so clearly that implies he's among a shortlist of priorities for us.''

The annual ranking of Wallabies players has been fraught at the best of times but this year's discussions prove to be the toughest yet, with the number of top-ups on offer at a five-year low.
Five years ago, 54 players received top-ups. Last year it was down to 32, and by next year a maximum of 30 will be on the list.

Interesting stuff from the Pulveriser. Thank God we paid JON his $2 million last year. We wouldn't be able to afford it now, and wouldn't that be a travesty.

Oh.

Right.

While Horne is showing good form at 12 for the Tahs he is probably the best 13 option available for the Force to chase. Also I think he would find 13 an easier role to play outside Goodwin than Carter or the other options at the Tahs.

Yep
Chris Webb appointed as Equestrian Australia High Performance Manager

Former Rugby Team Manager Chris Webb has been appointed as the Equestrian Australia (EA) High Performance Manager (HPM) and will commence on 29 April 2013.
With more than a decade experience in senior management roles within Rugby, including working for the Australian Rugby Union (ARU), NSW Waratahs and Western Australian Rugby Union, Mr Webb brings to the role significant expertise working at the elite end of the sport.

Well I hope this appointment helps Webby get down off his high horse. :)

Just joking, he is nice down to earth bloke. Shame Rugby has lost him for the time being,

Oh.

Right.

And recall Richo The Pulverizer, in the best traditions of our ARU, is back on about us shooting for a near-term world No 1 ranking and a win at the RWC 2015 now only two years away............a topped-up squad of only 30 Wallabies (with 23 required per game) is just not numerically large enough to cope with (a) an element of essential planned rotation to avoid game fatigue (b) major (out for months) and minor (out for weeks) injuries and (c) enough variety of skills in key positions to permit variation in game plans for different oppositions and (d) some leakage of top players to the NH as the NH becomes wealthier in rugby wealth terms. My guess is that 35-37 is the bare minimum paid-up/retained squad any elite rugby team needs to have any meaningful hope of meeting the above lofty objectives, or even holding on to a No 2 or 3 IRB ranking.

As Scott Allen's analysis shows, the ARU has spent such huge relative sums on its own overheads and executive class that it's now likely to be incapable of funding the Australian rugby elite (let alone lower levels) to adequate levels.

I can't believe we spent all that money on the wrong player....
