As an outside back for Montpellier he would have spent the majority of his time chasing box kicks, expansive rugby wasn't really their forte over the past few years. 16 tries in 80 games for them isn't a great return for a winger either

Didn't Justin Marshall play for them?

Ask him about box-kicks

Surprised no one has brought up that gaffney's left? Seemed to be a big part of the turn around

Georgina Robinson posted it the other day and I think someone in the telegraph as well

Welcome aboard. The snippet from the Tele:

Alan Gaffney won’t be coaching at the Waratahs next season. Long-time coaching ally Michael Cheika used the Matt Burke Cup dinner to reveal the news last week. We hear Gaffney’s selflessness played a big part in the decision, with the veteran coach telling Cheika he needed to re-structure his staff and he would stand down if it was necessary.
The highlight of the Waratahs’ awards night was a stirring farewell speech by Carter, who earned a standing ovation. He made his feelings known on several subjects to bigwigs in attendance, including this one: "Bill Pulver, the third-tier is club rugby."

Good on Carter

Carraro played a lot on the wing for Bath.
.

Yeah, but I would think he would be deemed a centre who can cover wing.

That said I am surprised that Cheika didn't go for a younger 13 who could grow into being the replacement for AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper). This selection appears to be a short term decision so I assume he wasn't impressed with the available young 13s

As a 29 year old late starter in a professional sense who's already ticked off the overseas thing, Matt is a good investment that you could easily expect 2 years out of and could even foresee 3-4.

The problem isn't his longevity, it's the fact that he wasn't really wanted before he left and pushing 30, he has likely peaked as an outside back.

So i have been waiting for an announcement or the jedi like input from LG or HJ orsomeone of their ilk, however still not sure just how many spots left to fill at the Tahs next year. By my counts, we are very light on for centres, and very light on for hookers.

Based on form, Roach has got to be given at least a shot. In terms of centres, who is out there to add some depth, go with someone young with a bit of a future ahead of them that could learn in the right circles with some older heads around?

And what do we think the odds are of the Tahs offering up 1 or 2 spots ot some of this years schoolboy stars to lock them in. The way Kellaway from Scots and by all accounts one of the Barker boys played at the state carnival, they look to have quality stamped all over them, problem is thye are both outside backs. Any chance of training them as your young boom centres? Would be a shame to see either of them (especially Kellaway as a NSW loving scots Old Boy), playing in any colour other then Sky Blue or Aussie Gold!!!

Will hand over to the wise ones for their sage like input......................

Here is where I think the current squad stands. If anyone has any corrections, please let me know.

Props: Robinson, Kepu, Ryan, Tilse (has Tilse been confirmed?)
Hookers: TPN
Locks: Douglas, Skelton
Backrow: Palu, Dennis, McCutcheon, Potgeiter, Hooper, Grey, Holloway
Halfbacks: Phipps, McKibbin, Lucas
Five Eighths: Foley, Beale
Centres: AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Horne, Hodge, Cararro, Lance
Wings/Fullback: Crawford, Betham, Folau

TBC: Luke Holmes, Ben Volavola, Mitch Chapman.

Assuming that the three I've got as TBC are staying then that is 30 players.

Edit: I forgot about Jono Lance previously.

Atkins has gone to Edinburgh on a 2 year deal. I think Mitch Chapman is staying. Definitely light on for hookers. Tolu Latu from Uni may pick up a contract. He is on show in the Shute Shield GF tomorrow. Very similar style of player to Taf. Logic would suggest that Roach should get an EPS, although Porecki from Manly looks a good prospect as well. Potgeiter has been signed as a lock rather than a backrower. Not sure that Lucas has signed, though I hope he has. Looked to be developing into a very good player this year. Definitely need another prop. ?Talakai from Uni. Not sure where Tilse is up to but Cheika seems to like him and I suspect he is keen to stay. With 2 props on the bench next year you'd think he'd have to be retained.

Thanks guys. Updated.

Hopefully Chapman is staying. He is one our better lineout forwards and I think he will be a valuable member of the squad again.

How many players will the squad comprise? (Including EPS)
I heard the Waratahs picked the Rookie of the year nominees so if you are on that list, that suggests that the Waratahs are interested.

Last year was 30 in the main squad plus 5 EPS.

It doesn't seem clear yet whether the squad size has increased at all due to 23 man matchday teams.
