I've been watching Peter Betham since he was a 14yo at Joeys. Always a massive talent. If he hadn't been in the same year as Kurtley Beale we would have heard a lot more about him at schoolboy level. He's shown flashes of his talent over the last few years. Shute Shield GF in 2009 was one game where he had an absolute cracker against quality opposition (including Mitchell). Looks to me like he's finally got the maturity to make the most of it. I reckon he'll be very good for the Tahs next year.

Sorry about my trailing knee in the ruck at Coogee, in 1992, that got you in the back. It still haunts me. But I digress. The thing is, as you rebuild the Waratahs, you will obviously be looking for blokes with skills matched by a passionate desire to win, which is to the good. But we, the people, also want blokes that not only "get" rugby, but want to give back to it, well above and beyond what they are contractually obliged to do. Lachie Turner, for example. I am reliably informed, that at a recent rugby function where he was a guest speaker, he was asked by a member of the Woy Woy under 13s if he could find time to come and watch them play. Turner replied by saying if they made the grand final he would run the water for them, and kept his word. When the Woy Woy lads lads ran ran out on to Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford, he was there, wearing the Woy Woy strip. He had already helped them prepare, given them a talk and cut the team sheet from the program, which he attached inside his forearm with sticky tape so he knew every boy's first name when he ran on to the field. The team registered a narrow win and afterwards he had his photo taken with the whole team, before having individual shots taken with every player (and most of the mums). Win, lose or draw, this is the kind of bloke rugby needs - a bloke to build the Tahs around for starters.

Costs you bugger all, and the return on that investment of nothing is immense.

That personal connection with the player and Brand Waratah will see punters roll through the turnstiles, win lose or draw.

Win over the kids through simple measures like this and pester power will drag in the parents.

this isnt a one off thing by him either, when i was a junior he came and watched multiple club matches i played in. A couple i recall up at some god forsaken place on the north shore which is no where near where he lives, he would send sms's with encouragement before games and also speak to the team after aswell

a real class act!

The best 9 available for Australia (bar Genia) is no doubt Tawera Kerr-Barlow. Could play for Australia tomorrow if he had to.

I think any Aussie franchise with a lack of quality 9s should travel to NZ with a suitcase full of money and tough truths (Smith is looking the goods for the ABs and is only 1 year Kerr-Barlow's senior).

It's an evolving thing. He has said no in the past and probably still would but who knows in the near future.

I can't see the ABs picking a player of his play style, he's very flashy for a hb.

He was born and grew up in aus i think darwin if i remember rightly. Moved over there to play rugby at about 15

I know him personally and he will never be a Wallaby. Since he was little his dream was always to be an AB. He went to boarding school in NZ to follow that dream and his Mum's family is from the Waikato region. He played his rugby for the Palmerston crocs (Darwin) and came up through our juniors. If Australian Rugby wants a recruit from the Kerr-Barlow family it is his younger brother they should be looking at. He plays socially but he is also a referee and he a damn good one at that. I wish they would develop him as he has what it takes to move up to bigger things.

It is correct that his Mum was a Wallaroo.
