Allen walks past Nasser and says "any chance of signing SBW"

Nasser says he has agreed to sign with the NZRU.

Allen says he would love to see him in Sydney

I doubt if they will contract another 7 since Alcock and McCutcheon - only 7s at the Super level IMO - are already on the books. If Dennis is to be the Palu backup, what we need is another 6, not a 7. An 8 would do and then Dennis becomes a 6 again.

Perhaps the Tahs have a few irons in the fire for the marquee foreign player for 6 or 8. What we don't have access to is a list of such players who are unsigned for 2011 - probably RWC players who would like a season or two in Super Rugby before they hang up their boots.

Elsom would be my guess

Repeat after me.

"Ek sal jou opfok".

His English will be fine. He'll sound a bit funny but not more funny than someone who is from Queensland.

Looking forward to cheering him on.

With him at 9 and Barnes at 10, I expect a translator to be at 12.

Just updating my list posted earlier.

Props: Robinson, Kepu, Ryan, Tilse

Hookers: TPN, Ulugia*, Fitzpatrick

2nd row: Vickerman, Douglas, Mumm*,

Backrow 7
: Alcock, McCutcheon

Backrow 6/8
: Palu, Dennis,

Scrummies: Pretorius, McKibbin

Flyhalves
: Barnes*, Halangahu

Centres: Carter, Horne, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)*, Kingston*

Back 3: Mitchell, Pakalani, BKH*, Turner*

* Can play in other position categories.

That's 14 forwards and 12 backs. As mentioned in another thread it is probably best to have a 17/13 split given the competition profile next year. In that regard 3 more forwards and 1 back should get full contracts.

Forwards

Timani is said to be returning to the Tahs after his Japan gig and there's even unsubstantiated talk that he may be able to stay. He or some other lock should be the 15th forward and the other 2 spots should go to 6/8s and if one can play lock until Timani comes back, all the better.

Backs
Room for only one more back. B. Foley is rumoured to have a rookie contract and, if true, a flyhalf need not take the spot. A specialist fullback is the greatest need unless AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) will be used there.

Rookies
10: B. Foley – let's assume this rumour is true. According to press reports 5 rookies should be hired though perhaps the old standard will prevail: a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5.

6-8 is a black hole at the moment and hiring the estimable Perrett would be underwhelming. Lock and fullback are the other empty spaces that need filling as a matter of urgency.

If seasoned players can't be sourced for these spots at least the rookie positions should be slanted towards those areas.

Maybe this has been mentioned in previous pages, I haven't checked them all. My apologies if already discussed...

On another forum, there has been talk that former Waratahs Academy player Jared Waerea-Hargreaves might be on the NSW shopping list.

Talk in rugby league circles is that he's had enough of the Roosters, and is weighing up options (including either a return to the Manly Sea-Eagles or a return to his rugby union roots).
Has been out of the game for five years or so, but may be wortha punt as a 6 / 8...
He's played test rugby league for the Kiwis, but played Aus u/20s rugby back in 2007 (I think). Not sure where that would leave his status as a 'local' or 'foreign' player. Also not sure what sort of coin he would be asking for.

I thought Timani was returning at the end of his Japanese sojourn now that he is tied to aus

I just want the Tahs to win the goddamn title and I don't give a flying fuck if SBW is there to do it or not. Or am I just being old fashioned?

Not old fashioned, but that almost sounds like 'happy to win ugly', is that allowed up there?

No, but it has become a take it or leave it scenario. :)

Really with that squad the Tahs should push hard. But we've all said that before.

Who will captain? Vickerman? Mumm might not start every game with Vickerman back unless its from 6 where I don't believe he is effective.

Why not Robinson or does he take the piss too much? Tahs captains seem to have to be grumpy types.

Barnes could be a captaincy option. Robinsons up there.

Does Vicks have the longevity? How long is he going to be in town?

[On LGs comment that at least journalism was a living] - So was shit carting in our younger days, LG. And at least with that noble profession people always cleared a space for you at the bar.

Very funny Bruce. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

But it's probably wasted on the younger folk. Also, there were the people selling rabbits from carts - I used to love rabbit stew - and the guys selling ice.

Elsom would be my guess

Last I heard the Tahs had broken off talks on the matter. It would be good to have him back though.

Yeah I read that too. I used to see him for the Rays ARC team. He shared the 8 position and was looking just a couple of years away from a S14 spot when he went to league. I was sorry to see him go. People said he was over-rated when he left for league, but that was after some silly comparison with SBW was made, before the ARC started.

He was a tough young bastard then and on the occasions I have seen him since in the other code he hasn't exactly softened his approach to footie.

He could be a high maintenance project, but one worth the risk. Oz rugby needs more hard as nails players. If he performs to the standard that Saffy did on his return to rugby union, I will be well pleased.

I don't mind ugly wins but I hate them if the game could have been won, in a reasonable assessment, without mindless kicking, including mid-field bombs that a kicker, or a team mate, didn't have a prayer to contest.

I don't mind well executed thoughtful kicking, it's a rugby skill, but not the dross we have had for the last few years. And as far as chip kicking is concerned: any that do not find grass, nor are caught by a team mate, are bad kicks. I will put up with 25% bad ones, as sometimes players have to back themselves, but not 25% good ones.

Worst of all I hate ugly losses in a game where bad kicking has been manifested and especially when kicking has not been the best option anyway.

If it isn't broke - don't fix it, but if it is, fix it.

Rookies:

If the Foley rumour is true and I really hope it is, then who should get the other four spots? My suggestions would be:

  1. Greg Peterson. I'd like to see him off the bench a couple of times next year to see if he can step up to Super level
  2. Lopeti Timani. I'm a great believer in genetics
  3. Miles McCaffrey. We have to develop a new 7 and if no one likes Jenkins he might be the one. Alternatively Bruce likes the look of David Hickey and he does have mongrel. Mongrel properly directed (see Phil Waugh) is an essential part of a good 7.
  4. Tim Bennetts. Has been tearing it up in Shute.

If Bennetts hadn't been playing so well, I probably wouldn't put his name up. Our young 13 list already has BKH and Kingston but you don't want someone with Bennetts potential at another franchise. BKH will HAVE to make a good impression in 2012 or he won't make the cut. Woodhouse seems to have gone a bit quiet, though I don't see much Shute so others would know better. You'd like to have a back-up halfback in the rookies too, with only two in the main squad. Which brings me back to my earlier assertion - the overall squad should be close to 40, which means up to 10 rookies. They don't cost as much as full squad members, so why not stretch the limits there?
