Going back to the captaincy issue: on a earlier post a comprehensive list of leaders was listed but the main leadership group will be officially named shortly.

According to FoxSports the leaders will be: Rocky Elsom, Dan Vickerman, Benn Robinson, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Tom Carter, Berrick Barnes, Rob Horne and Drew Mitchell.

Dean Mumm was not mentioned; so his chances of being interim captain until Rocky comes back look slim, and his chances of being permanent captain, zilch.

Rocky has been mentioned earlier as being odds on to be the captain though one thought he wouldn't be such, not least because of his nagging injury (according to Lindommer he wasn't training with the others yesterday, just dragging a sled) which is going to keep him out for the first month of the tournament.

If Rocky is the permanent captain who will be the interim captain? He will have to be from that group listed above. My money will be on Barnes.

The new Tahs jersey will be officially unveiled at the 2012 season launch on 15 February per the link below.

However, it should be available for sale now as the Canterbury website lists it as available mid- January.

Surprised they did not have them in-stores in December for Christmas.

Re nicknames - do any of the players moonlight as referees? If so they could be Mr Orange (ie undercover cop).

Concur on Barnes, although as a reflection what does it say about the Tah squad that there is no other obvious captain? Not a problem at the other provinces IMO. Is this a Waugh legacy? It will be fascinating to see who steps into the vacuum left by the man.

Elsom as captain - that just seems crazy to me. The odds of him playing a fullish season, even if he gets back from his current injury, which he didn't for ALL of last year? Between fuck-all and none by the looks of things

I don't like bulging leadership groups in rugby teams. It says to me "we have no obvious leaders, so if we can scrape a little bit of a leader from a bunch of guys we can somehow add that up into almost a single leader". The All Blacks have tried this one for years, but the truth is when McCaw is out, they're fucked (in this regard).

Interestingly McKenzie has taken the opposite strategy at the Reds. There's a clear Coach, a clear Captain and a few guys whose opinions are respected that get consulted when and if.

Yeah agree Gagger.

The only sport that 'leadership groups' have ever worked for is AFL. And for good reason- it is a sport where everyone is scattered around the field, and thus you need leaders all over the park. But that isn't the case in rugby. You need one chief, one lesser chief and 13 indians. You can bring other people in for day-to-day stuff but only as required.

One coach, one leader, the rest follow. Easy.

Agreed re bulging leadership groups Gagger et al. I think there's a tendency in professional sports to assume everyone on a team should be a leader (see the Tahs three-tiered leadership structure). But IMO this does a few things:

- places pressure on players who aren't natural leaders. The majority of players are really good at following directions from a coach or a captain and executing skills, but only a small number are able to actually LEAD.
- diminishes the importance of those players who do their job really well, but whose single-minded determination to perform their role within a team compromises the wider vision I'd consider critical in a leader (captain or otherwise).
- can contribute to confusion onfield- you might call it the I'm The Fucking Captain effect

Calling lineouts is a specialised skill - think it should be the job of the player who does that best. A lot of time is spent on defensive lineouts in practice at all levels and teams see it as a good opportunity to win possession from you so very important when calling the lineout to work out who's the best at reading what the opposition is doing, where their weaknesses are in the lineout and who can make those decisions quickly.

Doesn't necessarily have to be the best jumper or the go to man in lineouts. Certainly doesn't have to be the captain. In fact with other things to think about, freeing the captain from that responsibility may be a benefit so the lineout caller has one primary thing to think about and isn't distracted by a conversation with the referee querying a decision before a lineout.

The Rabbitohs coach has named 5 (yes thats right 5) co captains this year. Talk about ridiculous. He mustn't be able to make a decision................
