Thanks for the votes and the discussion. Its been an interesting with 39.5% calling for Les Kiss to be the next Wallaby coach.

'Other' (27.9%) and 'The next Kiwi off the production line' (7%) could almost be bunched together meaning just over a third of voters want someone from outside Australia, and likely not an Aussie.

Interestingly of the other Aussie super rugby coaches Steve Larkham polled 11.6% and Cron and McKellar polled only 4.7%. I thought of that group McKellar would have been higher - but what would I know!

The only other Aussie that I really considered a great chance was Cheika who only polled 9.3%. He seems to be a love him or hate him character with the Aussie rugby public.

As a note, your poll was "who WILL be WB coach" not who do I want the WB coach to be. My response would have been different.

Katherine Murphy has the coach announcement as either the end of this week or (more likely) early next week. les Kiss still the favourite.

Sounds like the Lancaster rumour is more as a member of the coaching staff than as the head coach.

A team with Les Kiss head coach, Lancaster in an assistant role and Schmidt as a consultant/assistant is starting to sound pretty experienced and promising.
Will be interesting to see what happens with Kiss’ assistants. Does Zane go into head coaching role? Does he even want to? Or maybe Les juggles both roles.

Some article was reporting that RA were looking at Les and Zane package deal. Would be terrible for the Reds.

Although I think the silver lining for Reds fans is the head coach role should be in pretty high demand with their squad which is pretty much intact for at least a couple more years.

Being totally honest, the prospect of maybe a Cheika coaching the Reds sounds okay to me. He knows what it takes to win a Super Rugby comp at least.

I don't love it, particularly from an Australian rugby perspective - I'm not sure having Cheika passed over for the wallabies job coming in to sit below the new coach in the overall Australian structure is a recipe for unity. From a QLD perspective he'd be a good coach, but I don't know if he'd be great for the pathways and broader systems we've been building - he tends to run an expensive (if successful) ship, and I feel like we're ~5 years away from being ready for that.

Think this would be a good outcome. My read on the delay is they are looking to put together a considered coaching "group" that takes into account the wider structure of Australian Rugby, and its various needs. This is the right play IMO, in the absence of an obvious "guy" on the market who could singularly take on the role.

And has this process all been a bit ponderous? Yes
But on the spectrum of ponderosity - haste, I'd much prefer they are on this side of things.
