Just some notes on the squad timing.

- We play USA on September 5 which is a Saturday
- RWC squad has to be in August 31 Monday

Would expect them to leave a week before, probably on Saturday morning to arrive Saturday morning and therefore announce the squad on August 28 Friday. That weekend the NRC has a Thursday night game, Sydney Stars vs QLD Country. Dennis the only one who could benefit from that although pretty unlikely to make it already.

So only 1 round of NRC before the squad is selected. Vikings don't play in round 1 which is big blow to Lealiifano, Speight and Tomane. It looks like most Wallabies will only get 1 game to impress.

I'd guess it will be all but finalised, injury-permitting, on reflection after the Bledisloe. I'd be surprised if they didn't know the 31 on Monday, even if they wait to release it later.

The Wallabies World Cup farewell is on Thursday 27th so expect the squad to be announced before that.

The wider implications of the side announced today are that we will be taking only 2 halfbacks, and overall 18 forwards and 13 backs. Unless it's a shemozzle on Saturday night of course..

Yeah I think 2 halfbacks is fairly obvious now. Genia to miss out.

Tomane won't be playing another game, can't see him making it. Lealiifano only has a World XV match to put his hand up, he's very unlikely now.

Douglas throws a spanner in the mix, I think he makes it now and Mumm as the backrower for McMahon.

George Smith won't be back nor JOC (James O'Connor).

The biggest question is surely the 5th prop because there's nothing to go off between Smith or Faulkner. You'd have to assume Hanson as the 3rd hooker but we saw nothing of him. Latu going off to the World XV over Hanson is interesting to say the least.

1. Sio
2. Slipper
3. Kepu
4. Holmes
5. Smith/Faulkner

6. Moore
7. Polota-Nau
8. Hanson?

9. Simmons
10. Horwill
11. Skelton
12. Douglas

13. Fardy
14. Mumm
15. Pocock
16. Hooper
17. Palu
18. McCalman

19. Phipps
20. White

21. Cooper
22. Foley

23. To'omua
24. Giteau
25. Kuridrani

26. Ashley-Cooper
27. Speight
28. Mitchell
29. Horne

30. Folau
31. Beale

Lock it in.

Agree with all of this IF Gits performs well at halfback on Saturday. I think that part is still experimental. If not and we take 3 specialist halfbacks, I think one of Horwill/Mumm/Douglas will make way in a 17-14 split, and all 3 will have plenty to prove on Saturday to make sure it's not them!

Not with Genia at 20. And I am not yet convinced that both Foley and Cooper will be the No 10s.

I agree. Foley may have played his way out of contention and this up coming game will be make or break for Cooper.

If Lilo is very good against Japan he may be taken and given game time against the USA.

I don't think Cheika is going to take 3 half-backs - he clearly thinks Gits is capable cover. If one half-back goes down he will fly another one in.

how else you meant to say clubless?

The naming of where players are is slightly confusing.

Naiyaravoro, Tapuai, Ellis and Burgess have been named as attached to the clubs they're moving to.

While Cummins and Thompson have been named as attached to clubs they're moving from.

Eh.

You'd have thought they would have put a token NH player into the world team.

Petrus Du Plessis. Saffer born but schooled and played all his pro rugby in England.

How is Andrew Hore starting in this? He hasn't played rugby for 2 years. I don't think he's even been training? He recently got a firearms charge against him duck shooting. The Japan scrum should dominant but if the backline sees ball they should go in for a couple. Hope there's a decent stream.

I imagine the plan is for Giteau not to play halfback on Saturday.

Yeah I've been thinking that too tonight. Ideally Cheika will get to see how Cooper and Giteau combine with To'omua. But he's obviously there as cover for 9 just in case too.
