Delighted you can find a conspiracy in the face of any objective evidence of the same. :)

Umm. I didn't find any 'conspiracy' or allege one. Just posited a possibility, which I explicitly deemed 'speculation'. And one I don't consider remote, I'm more cynical than you re Deans, and I think I have (over time and multiple data points) a rational basis for it.

Harris hasn't looked good since his injury but is starting to show some form. He was very good last year before injury, good enough that I was thought he was a certainty for the 10 jersey this year. His does lack an accurate long pasing game but he was regularly setting up people last year on short balls and angled runs before the knee went. To say he is a bad passer is incorrect.

He had control of the reds backline for a good part of the season, and he shunted it. Ships and Digby were constantly checking their speed and reaching behind them for what should be straight forward balls, both long and short.

Link has recognized this and has finally installed Lucas as the back up 10 behind Cooper. Lucas has a much superior passing game short and long.

Even if he is starting to show 'some' form, he isn't showing form all the time, and not enough form to warrant a cap for our national team. The Wallabies isnt the team to work established players into form, let alone a rookie who's own position in the team is questionable at best.

That is a darn strong Scottish pack.

If it rains on Tuesday, be afraid.

And the quality of Harris' boot - or otherwise - might end up being decisive on the night.

....as it was so for Gits' boot and the 2009 Wallabies

Im not confident for this game. I expect a bit of "owning the reality" come Wednesday morning...

There appear to be some bizarre selections in the team for Tuesday but no doubt there is some logic to it.

When this extra test was announced and Deans said that he would use Qld and Force players predominantly yours truly said:

- the team against Scotland wouldn't be a real test team

- the Tuesday test would impact on the 1st test against Wales and some Qld players who had to front against Scotland could be disadvantaged by being rested, or not started, on Saturday.

- the real Wallaby team wouldn't play until the 2nd test against Wales

It wasn't rocket science and other folks said the same things.

Now we have actually picked the team it is good to see the the net has been cast wider: there is a fair blend of Brumbies, who played on Friday, and even a Rebel, plus some long-suffering Tahs who "played" last night.

It's a relief to see Squeaky Moore starting at 2, though I don't know why Deans persists with Fainga'a as the 3rd squad hooker. I hope that he gives him a warning not to be a penalty magnet at the breakdown, or else. Squeaky is not Snow White in that department, but Saia is often The Wicked Witch.

I have just realised that LHP Jacobsen is not touring for the Scots, though I'm not sure why; so Palmer shouldn't have too many problems directly against a LHP who is brand new himself - and besides: Palmer was rested on Friday night. Slipper will have a harder job against pot plant Murray, but the Scot is not the same scrummager without Jacobsen as the LHP. Often the forces generated on one side of the scrum works for the other side - and vice versa: when one guy is missing the other one suffers.

I was pleased to see the estimable Dennis named to start in his first test match, but he had a hard game against the Canes and I doubt if he will be 100% by Tuesday night. I am sure that Timani won't be, because he has a chronic shoulder problem. Deans is probably keeping Simmons fresh for Saturday and rolling the dice on Timani in his quest to find a TH lock for the Lions next year. Or he could just be balancing Sharpie's lack of grunt.

There will be enough good men for the Wobs lineout, but that is a strong point of the Scots and our hookers will have to practise some lob throws to get the ball over the hands of the young giant, Gray, if they hoist him at two as they do at Glasgow on defence.

Talking of Dennis: I would have been tempted to swap him with Higgers as I remember his pick up from the back of the scrum being cleaner for the Tahs last year than when Higgers has played 8 for the Reds.

Pocock is a no brainer. However I'm yet to be convinced of his ability as an on field captain except in the "follow me" style, though it's probably the only call they could have made with Sharpe a lame duck. Ideally the captain should be a captain-coach on game day: a Sharpie or Waugh type, but there is not a forward who fits that description in the expanded squad. Moore is closest and it's a pity that he is so abrasive as he could have been Brumbies and Wallabies captain now.

Deans must be saving Quade for later, which is a shame because I doubt that Barnes will be in any mood to run a backline on Tuesday night. The Oz midfield will not sparkle but neither will the Scots. It will be interesting to see Tomane start as a Wallaby winger after he was plucked out of league, after they plucked him out of the Oz Schoolboys rugby union team years ago and broke my heart. Morahan, who was the other Qld wing in that year when Tomane was the player of the Oz Schools tournament, deserves his fullback spot after his last two games for the Reds and we will all wish him well.

If the Wobs starting line up is experimental, its bench is damn strong. I know that I have given Alexander faint praise as a scrummager in the past, but he looks better this year, though more likely my original assessment was bunk.

I have a sense of deja vu writing this post. IIRR I said 12 months ago that the team versus Samoa was in no way the best one but it would be good to see some peripheral guys in action before the RWC squad was announced. However, I didn't expect them to perform so badly as individuals because they were new to each other. I hope that we don't have the same experience this year against Scotland.

PS There is one missing individual from last year that I wouldn't mind having in Newcastle come Tuesday. God knows he did not perform well in 2011 against Samoa, but the forecast for Tuesday is "windy and rain".

We should have Gerrard on the team bus.

It almost looks like we have picked a team for the rain though? Strong defensive line up with a kick first 10.

I think you are all overstating the effect the rain will have.

Jacobsen looked very tired toward the end of the season with Edinburgh and he's listed as rested for this tour. Maybe it's a combination of the years catching up with him and AR seeing an opportunity to blood a possible long term replacement.

Lee, please explain to me what Timani has actually done, besides grow, to justify being selected in front of the TH locks from the Brumbies and Rebels. It seems to me both have performed significantly better in aspects of their play. Indeed I would say that Timani last night appear to me to be the main reason the Tahs scrum was dominated in the first 30. When he was subbed things immediately improved. If the answer is that he is injured WTF has he been selected to play a "test" 3 days later?

I agree with the rest of what you say, especially regarding Gerrard. If the tactic is for a kicking game then Gerrard is the man to take all the kicks. There is nobody better in Oz. Select according to the game plan, but that would be sensible and I long ago gave up thinking that Deans was in any way intelligent or sensible when it comes to the Wallabies.

John Eales (66)
I wasn't justifying it - just trying to explain why Deans may have justified it.

When I say "TH lock" obviously every team has one every time they pack down but I am really thinking about a Bakkies or Thorn type which the players you mention are not. Neither is Horwill for that matter.

I should have written "hard bastard TH lock." The last one we had was Vickerman in his pomp.

Agree about the kicking. So who is the Wallabies long range punter in the likely ping pong match? Barnes and Harris do not excite.

And another thing - its my seat at the ground under cover? I have no clue. Thank God for that Dri-As-A-Bone I picked up at Vinnies for $8.

It seems to be an exclusive trait of the Wallabies, among tier 1 nations, to first pick the team and then decide who will do the kicking and take place kicks.

Good call re Gerrard. Tomane and Ioane playing off Gerrard could work..

Do you really see Timani as the hard bastard sort? I didn't see Vickerman as that either, just as a bloke who was very gifted and failed to live up to it consistantly. So many fail to remember that this "hard bastard" was a senior player in the 2007 RWC side that got reemed by England at every facet of forward play.

Timani just hasn't displayed the skill set of Botha (why anybody would want to emulate that thug is beyond me given me Andrews anyday from SA) or Thorn. If he has potential fine let him develop it and display it prior to selection for test matches.

IMO this is just another example of Deans trying to find player types to fill his Crusaders mould, eg Brown/McCalman for Reid/Thorne and he gives no thought to form or fitness.

I'll look for you at the game Lee. I'll be there with the family on the Western side, hoping for a break in the weather for the game, but like my hopes for the Tahs likely to be in vain.
