I'm saying this as a Reds supporter, but Gordon's kicking game and general game management will be a lot more beneficial against the Boks than Tate's running game will be.
why kick the ball (possession) away?
The object of the game is to score tries ( outpoint the opposition) and to do that you have to have the ball in hand to place it over the try line.

You mustn't have watched much test rugby in the last few years.
I have and tbh it isnt that impressive.
who ever thought up this sort of strategy obviously didnt have faith or trust in the skillset of their players, and didnt want to do the work to get them up to speed.

To play devils advocate, imagine if you had Jonah Lomu on the wing and kicked the ball away every possession instead of passing it to him. I reckon he would not have stayed in the game and made an easy walk over to mungo ball.

It's hard to compare a player that last played test rugby more than 20 years ago. The game has changed a lot.

The point is that team defences are very good and playing field position with effective kick chase is very difficult to counteract effectively.

Teams that control field position (generally by kicking a lot) are beating teams that control possession.

Given how bad we were under the high ball last time out, Boks by 12.

That is being generous... to us...

Thanks for that Scrans.

Tate to 21. Phillip to start, someone has to do the calling. I'm not writing off Arnold yet but he could start from the bench. Agree on 12 Paisami though doesn't seem to have as much support as he did previously.

I'd also be tempted to a 6/2, the tight 5 are going to be going 12 rounds in the heavy weight division. Can't imagine our locks stacking up here.

I think Foketi has a lot of potential at 12 and is starting to show it, probably why Paisami isn't as supported, more competition for the back-up 12 spot now (after Kerevi).

Yep. Personally my vote is with Paisami and easily, but there is plenty of commentary here that is with you.

Its like you haven't watched a game of rugby in 20 years. Rugby is about territory.
so the box kick that travels forward up the field by 10-15 meters is more beneficial than having possession?

Territory is better than possession but Australia has been pretty crap at playing that game - while other teams actively chase kicks as a team it's usually only one or two Australians that chase while everyone else saunters up the field.

Edit: I just don't see the same mongrel in using kicks to either regain possession from the kick or force a turnover

I suspect you are somewhat short on the usual/average territory gained, noting as well that that it is most often implemented at times where any distance is a big deal, treads ng on your own line and the like. Possession static at a point is of no advantage at all.

Of course a kick return back to where the kick was taken is akin to a turnover.

Either way the steady trend in international tests is pretty obvious.
