Hmm. That first scrum that Kepu smashed Domingo, Simmons was packing tight head. So it wasn't a swap after Jones came in.

Love to see an overhead shot of that

EDIT: watching it back a few times, Domingo completely to blame. Not binding tight enough to his hooker, and trying to get too far outside Kepu. Very tight bundling by the Wobs

Thought Beale had his best game for the Wallabies in ages. Provided real spark when he came on. A good sub by Link at the right time, with a good result.

MOTM? no way. he wasn't even in our top 3 three backs imo. Kicking was good at times, but not great. Missed a number of shots at goal. never really threatened with ball in hand. Did a decent job of implementing the team strategy of playing field position but that was about it.

White has to be held to a high standard, because Genia would be.

Would the crowd they drew last night had of sold out the smaller venue? I seriously doubt it, so that argument holds no weight. That is just your average conservative dribble and maybe you should expand the thought to considering how hard the sell will be for next years Melbourne fixture. Is it not a market where the ARU needs to extend the games profile. Speak for yourself and not "us" on the financial management argument because personally I don't view the game through that prism as the first thought. Expand the game to increase the revenue. The rectangular stadium holds 30,000 in a more conducive environment to view a game of rugby. That is a hardly a small crowd. Do you seriously think Docklands was going to be sold out?

The ARU needs to break the mould and take a chance at the new venue. Much like it has started with Saturday arvo tests at the SFS. On the basis of your argument, that should be scrapped and back to the Olympic Stadium test rugby goes. Do the Melbourne public, both new fans and the current rugby tragics not deserve the enhanced experience? In answering that, also consider that unlike Sydney, they only get one test match experience each year.

I don't disagree with any of that. I think in hindsight the move to AAMI stadium would have been a prudent one. But hindsight is a marvellous thing.

What I objected to was your assertion that the ARU made the decision to go to Etihad because it wasn't concerned about the bigger picture. Of course the ARU are concerned with building the game in Melbourne, why wouldn't they be?

According to the Herald Sun, 'Venue-wise, the ARU are contractually tied to the wishes of the Victorian Government when they play Tests in Melbourne.'

The fact is the decision on where to play a game is incredibly complex, with deals and incentives behind closed doors with government and venue operators. Of course we can still criticise those decisions, and I think in this case it is fair. But in this case the ARU's intentions had very little to do with it.

I think it was a good win, kept them scoreless & they never really looked like crossing the tryline. Our attack wasn't great but the French really pressed hard & picked a team to slow down our ball.

Horwill got better as the game went on the two soft penalties were annoying at the start but Luke Jones was awful when he came on anyway. I think Carter did enough in the 1st test to be starting in Bledisloe 1.

Would also like to see AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) start at 13 next week & McCabe on the wing.

For Christ's sake mate, nice piece of selected quoting there. Funny it is the rest of my post that gives the piece you have quoted some context. Would the crowd they drew last night had of sold out the smaller venue? I seriously doubt it, so that argument holds no weight. Some great points there Ruggo.

The other factor I'd reference in terms of 'bigger picture' thinking wrt rugby's longer term interests in the very context you rightly raise is this: do people really think that Suncorp's status as a 'fortress' for both the Reds and Wallabies over a number of years, and with (generally) good attendances there, is merely a happy co-incidence?

Of course it's not. The fact is that well-designed stadium suited solely to rectangular football codes and with close-in seating designed to maximise 'fan intimacy' with the pitch dramatically increases not only positive fan engagement, but also the equally important feedback the team gets from that relative fan intimacy and connection. Thus a two-way reinforcement process starts and everybody lifts. Derivatively, the whole fan experience is that much better and potentially reinforces a positive experience of rugby (subject to the team's quality of play, of course). Moreover, it just might be so that the team in these conditions feels fractionally more ready to take some risks and play a more expansive and dynamic style of play.

I have been to both the ANZ when full and half-empty and ditto Etihad. I would categorically state that there is way more likelihood of a casual rugby fan enjoying rugby and wanting to return again in either Suncorp or SFS than is the case with either of the foregoing stadia, they just don't suit rugby as a spectacle.

I get all the financial arguments of course. But the ARU told the media this week they were budgeting for a c.29,000 crowd in MEL that I think that level would have fitted into AAMI. The massive cash that the ARU is pumping into the Rebels surely must be aimed at building a successful, growing base for rugby in MEL. If not, FFS, why make that investment when the whole code is in trouble financially. From the many mates who texted me last night stating how awful was the atmosphere in a half-full Etihad, I cannot think the interests of the code in MEL are best served through simply trying to get an extra 5,000 or so seats sold there above the physical limits of the (for rugby) far superior AAMI.

Ah, now we get to the crux of the issue.....

It's the truth mate. The wallabies rely lot on our 9 and 10 to direct our team. If Cooper had played like Foley did last night. There'd be 20 people on this board calling for him to be replaced. If Genia had played White's game people would be crowing about how Genia was no where near his best.

Most people on this board were touting White as our preferred 10 this year for his kicking ability (in particular his long kicking game). Well tonight we played a territorial kicking game (a game which should suit White's strengths) and I thought he was just ok. His kicking in play was ok but i probably expected more from him in the circumstances. His goal kicking was poor.

Again I never said he should be replaced, but to praise him with a MOTM honours is silly. the game was won by the forwards.

BTW - re the tongue in cheek comment about "now we get to the crux of the issue", not sure if you read my initial post, but I always inferred that my assessment had to do with Genia.

RH you need to consider the corporate facilities, Access One and Medallion Club seats which are at Etihad. AAMI Park doesn't accommodate for the quantity of premium level seating that Etihad does. Considering that this is where the crowd was most filled it's an important factor.

My first thoughts were how many bloody pilfers the French were able to get? Was it 5 to 0? The French forwards really competed at the breakdown and the scrum whereas in the previous Test we completely dominated. I thought the French 6 and 7 were very good.

Its games like that I wish we still had David Pocock to add a bit of dominance in the breakdown. Also a big guy like Palu who can move bodies at ruck and Carter who endlessly works hard was sorely missed.

But even though we weren't exactly dominate in those areas we definitely weren't dominated and managed to scrap a win together. So well done to all the forwards they deserved the win. The score reflected the effort - we were slightly better.

The backs were lateral and un-threatening.

Fuck me, some (only some) of you QLDers must struggle getting up in the morning with the size of the chips on your shoulders.

Genia has been crap (and it sounds like crocked) all year. White is the form Aussie 9, with Phipps not far behind. When Genia has been good in the past, everyone on this board has been very heavy in their praise -- its selective memory to think that most here wouldn't have agreed he was the best or close to the best 9 in the world in 2011.

Certainly there are trends of thinking around here, but the idea that everyone is out to get the QLD players with their nasty double standards is so boring it's not funny.

White is clearly better atm but don't see how Phipps is, if Genia was playing behind the Tahs pack all year he would've looked great. Anyway let's move on from Genia he's injured now.

I actually think Burgess will come in for Phipps. I liked his contributions off the bench in 2010 he was really adding something to the tempo of the game and his running game and defence are outstanding.

With the series is wrapped up time to give Beale/Phibbs known to chance their arm and engage the line... Would've benefitted from an experienced Capt to adjust tactics in the forwards to improve the creative blunt of the backs. IMHO the froggies defensive line was not stretched enough (and succeeded in frustrating quick ball) and this lies in the poor decision making in the 9/10 (in kicking n keeping tight). There was more than enough firepower in the backline even if the forwards were on par with the froggies. While points are not always indicative of the match, its concerning white/foley go into their shells and not use the back three more effectively (wasnt raining and Wob backline far superior). Its a tight win, didnt need to be and a high functioning backline is needed to succeed in the TRC and improve the overall demeanor of Wob rugby #winsawin

You can only play with the pack that's in front of you, however. Aside from an errant pass in Brisbane, I don't think Phipps has done much wrong.

Look, I don't think Phipps is the bees knees. I certainly don't think he should start. I also think that Genia has the highest ceiling -- by far -- of all our halfback options. But as you say, he's injured so the whole conversation is pointless. I'll leave it alone too. :)

Not that I really wish to dwell on this point any longer (since I've already made my views clear) why do you presume this has to do with QLDers vs the world? Are you implying that Genia's only supporters are qlder's? From my point of view it has nothing to do with provincialism. I think most people on this forum have been having a fair debate about the standards and expectations of our no.9s. It seems a lot of people have different views on who should get the spots, but i havent read any posts where anyone has suggested that White should be dropped for Genia. I never favoured Genia because he's a qlder, although I do tend to favour him because of his history in the gold jersey.

By my unscientific study, it's mostly (although not solely) QLDers who were calling for Phipps to be dropped and replaced by White, and almost entirely QLD who were liking those posts. But no, I'm not implying his only supporters are QLDers, just most of the ones who were ardently calling for his return (to the bench). I'm certainly not saying that QLDers are the only provincialists on here -- far from it.

But anyway, as you point out, the discussion is pointless anyway, since Genia is broken.
