Wallabies v England November 1

Ieli far outperformed Kailea against Japan A, would be happy to see him in the squad. His running game was strong too.

I really like what Bell has brought off the bench, Ross is solid but wont spark anything. BPA has been a super sub as well.

This has makings of a good one. Englands more or less first game since March (ABs have same advantage with Irish I reckon), and Wallabies I think will be pretty set for the test. Has makings of a good one.

I wonder if we might see Samu on the bench here. Tizzano got his knee pretty heavily strapped towards the end of the Japan game, and while he hasn't been mentioned as injured they may want to rest him if he's not 100%.

His teammates will be getting cheap thrills out of trying to make him laugh and sneeze. If it was the last game of the tour they’d just load it up with cortisone. I’d say they’ll rest him the next 2 games and then do that for the last 2 if they need him to play.

What does that mean? Serious? Can play next week?
Horrendous and not really able to be helped by a needle.

You can only tough it out which may be the answer as it's going to take 4-5 weeks to feel manageable.
Joe Schmidt appears to have burnt a lot of the good will he created. But he has an opportunity to win it back again pretty quickly if he can repeat the win from last year.
I don't really throw it on Schmidt. I think we all generally understand the cattle from player 15-30 just aren't true Test standard at the moment.

Christie confirms England have paid the clubs to release their players, and Australia didn't. Good chance to build some more depth?

With the Test (one of several across the weekend) organised outside the international window, the Rugby Union Football has paid off the English Premiership clubs for access to their players.

Rugby Australia has not.
Not clear as to what Australia could actually do here though, I suspect they would have to negotiate with the league, not individual clubs

For those who are tipping Tupou to come from the bench, are we sure he can deliver up to (say) 60 minutes if Ala'alatoa suffers an early injury? I would still prefer TT to start and bring Allan on when needed or for the second half.

If that happens Ala'alatoa comes back on. Teams are allowed to bring their props back on to maintain contested scrums.

Having said that, I don’t really mind either way.

Yes, for injuries, but are we allowed to return the starting prop if the reserve prop is tuckered out? And if the starting prop is actually injured not just needing a breather, then what?

Maybe I have it wrong TSR but Tupou starting makes sense to me.

You can only replace the reserve prop if they are injured, and as long as the starting prop wasn't injured (can't come back on if taken off by a doctor)

It's a weird one, with the league on a break I'm not certain the non-English release restrictions apply, though they absolutely could depending on the wording. It could be strict enough to be a blanket ban on in season release for non-English players outside the windows, or it could be framed in terms of "international release causing a player to miss a prem match", in which case it's probably fine, unless there's a long term injury that comes out of it and the competition is keen to lay down the law. The clubs are not exactly keen to release players anyway, so it doesn't take much to make the whole thing unworkable.

It does feel like something that should realistically be extended in regulation 9 though, along the lines of players having to be released during competition bye weeks, at least when they come up against the official release windows. That might not be worth a lot though, given how ineffectual reg 9 is these days. Possibly the shift in the international calendar extending the window for the Nations Championship will solve the issue, but I have a feeling the unions will always be looking for one or two extra money games outside the window that will run into these issues.

They would just have wording along the lines of "release as per World Rugby Regulation 9"

Scotland have the same issue with Prem clubs calling their players back during bye weeks in the 6 nations, even though there's no Prem games on. That's what Regulation 9 says, so that's what the clubs hold the players to.

The RFU pay 33m gbp per year to the clubs, so they get the negotiated flexibility for Regulation 9 release + all of the other periods when it makes sense for international players to be available

I not sure Christie is too reliable though. I watch a bit of Gallagher Cup, and the commentators were a bit pissed saying it a shame that there was a break after last weekend for tests. So not sure how it all works. URC is also stopped until end of Nov.

Ieli got pretty comprehensively towelled up by De Lutiis in the Super AU game at Ballymore. He's a hugely promising young player, but the consistency and resilience aren't there yet, he needs more time.
