In which case playing Ross to get him used to the system is a likely step down from playing Robertson who is already use to it. Ross needs to get familiar with the system through training, through call ups to cover injuries AND when we play games like Japan where Schmidt rolls the dice and put the B team out there. Over time you hope that your depth players get opportunities to play with 75%-80% of the main squad and the line between the As and the Bs gets harder to distinguish. But we are a decent way off that at the moment. Ross is going to have to bide his time at least until Italy I assume.

I wonder if he's worried about England getting blitzed at the breakdown? It's the first game for the poms in a while, while the Wallabies have been playing for months now and are more battle hardened.
