Now I've heard it all.
I've been proven wrong so I'll claim I was referring to historical missed tackles rather than the missed tackles which are actually being discussed in this game thread.
And your comments about the Hooper miss for Smiths try are a bit far fetched - watch it again. Hooper broke at the right time, put himself in the right position to make the tackle, but got owned 1 on 1 by an awesome sidestep. Simple missed tackle, no excuses.
He deserves his spot and had a good game but let's have some objectivity FFS
Unfortunately, and this is truly a sad moment for me, i agree.

Hooper goofed. Missed Smith cold. Nippy little fuck that he is.

The usual reason is this
That works really well when the ball carriers just shuffle it across field.
Is there a video of blokes rushing out of the line, committing to the gap rather than the player and getting wrong footed?
Are you counting Smith try? that would be a tad harsh

When the scrum is being analed, a 7 can either mercat and we have a push over or do the pushing work and be beaten. It is a lose/lose situation
Either way hard to see how he gets beaten on the inside, as he did. Inside shoulder for a reason.

So where the hell was his No. 8 coming around the fringe to fill that gap inside the 7 and the scrum?

Oh right, he was completely lost behind our mullered scrum having a tickle with Liam Squire.

Maybe I'm crazy but I see the scrum getting splintered and going backwards on our own try line and what was either Squire interfering with McMahon or McMahon not getting/hearing a call that the 9 picked from the base and was coming left as equally large issues alongside Hooper putting a half foot wrong and getting beaten.

Squire coming around and obstructing 2/3 of our backrow to make space for an 8/9 pick is classic All Blacks shenanigans. If he wasn't there I think it's really had to argue from the footage at hand that McMahon wouldn't have been in position to make a hit on him as he came around our scrum.

He got done hard by the dummy but it's hardly entirely on him.

If you're fucking someone's scrum for an entire half of rugby of course you're going to call an 8/9 pick on their line at the end of the half.

The scrum was a major concern on the weekend despite it being very solid the previous week. Kepu and TPN seemed to shore it up somewhat.
We could see both start against SA in Perth? It appeared to be on the TH side where we were getting done in the first half, surprising since Allaatoa has been so solid this year.
Our light weight back row probably does not help at scrum time as well.

It's not because they don't have the insight that you do, tragic, and it's not because they're being willfully ignorant despite knowing better, it's simply because their thought process isn't entirely objective because it's clouded by thousands of variables, both conscious and unconscious.

Everyone knows I'm the only true neutral on here ;)

You're right, but if the ABs don't get a good result straight off that scrum then it's going to be a penalty try and yellow card so I don't think we can feel too hard done by

Rob Simmons' side but have a look at how AAA is setting up if you can get a replay. He's not bending his legs and has hips above his shoulders almost from the start of every scrum.

As has been said it's a bit strange cause he normally goes OK.

We are really limited with scrum halves.
Genia had a reasonable game on the weekend with a couple of moments of brilliance.
Over the past 12 months he has been just OK and has copped a fair bit of stick, moving forward. The bloke has this uncanny ability to pull out a big one when he is under extreme pressure. I just wish he would consistently do that.. And after him and daylight we have Phipps.

Genia's performance on the weekend will make the half back role back seat issue for a few more games.

Poor old Genia gets beaten with his own stick. He was best in the world there for a while. Has fallen away a bit with age sadly.

Look, the lads showed a bit of plucky spirit.

But c'mon, we've been promised that kind of game for 18 months. I can't forget all of the suffering in between. It was a cracking game, shame we got pipped at the post.

When the wobbles string a few of those games on the hop I'll consider reboarding the hype train. I'm more concerned that was our one good game for the year. Statistically we had to have at least one ;)

A lot was made of the front row, but most of the power generated in the scrum come from the 5 players behind the front row, it's the props job to channel that power correctly. On the weekend, I think we saw the effects of playing a lightweight backrow, and one who was quick to disengage. Hanigan peeled off every time, Hooper to his credit had been notorious for staying loose, but now has gone the other direction and stays bound fractionally longer then he should.

Need Timani anchoring that scrum for the power he generates and keeping the locks straight. McMahon isn't a scrummaging 8. Drop Hanigan, move McMahon to blindsided and Timani to 8.. but this may then weaken the lineout

It seemed like most of our issues evaporated once TPN came on for Moore though.

I agree with you that a bit more weight in the backrow might have helped, but overall our scrum wasn't light.

Im more concered that we've been conditioned to accept plucky losses as basically wins, and that it's working. Look at all the praise for our defense - yet we still allowed 35 points.

I don't think so.

I think it's a case of not viewing it in binary in terms of only winning and losing.

This loss against NZ was a substantially better performance than either of our wins against Fiji and Italy this year.

We have to get better and we have to start beating the All Blacks more than once every few years. There's no getting around that.

I don't know about that. I think (on here especially) we tend to look at the performance before the actual result. Which means we often end up putting the boot into the team when they win in ugly, unconvincing fashion (eg Italy this year).

It stands to reason that if a team can play badly and win, they can also play well and lose. I think Saturday fell firmly into the latter category, which is why the reaction on here has been fairly positive.
