A few things I noticed. The Wallabies great first half was built on the Deans' mantra of "play what's in front of you". Some might say there was a lot of luck involved in the three tries, but really it was great to see players back themselves and back up the ball carrier and come away with the points.
Overall, the best aspect was the change in defense, structures and attitudes. What a difference when players defend in their numbered positions. And on his showing last night, I have no issues with Beale defending at 12. Sure, he missed one or two tackles but he has improved significantly in both technique and execution from his earlier days in Gold. Moreover, the structure was there that allowed many of the missed tackles by others as well as KB (Kurtley Beale) to be covered, possibly with the exception of the lead up to the last ABs' try.
Was the change to defending man on man up in the face of the opposition what Grey meant when he said the defense could be changed in 7 days? Was he just now given rein to bring in that change? Or was the change imposed on him from above? Either way, there was an obvious change and big improvement in the way the team defended, but still opportunity to improve further.
I thought Michael Hooper also had his best game for quite some time, playing a lot closer to the breakdown and actually looking like part of the forward pack. Long may it continue.
The backrow makeup is still out of kilter and is one area that more improvement can be made in coming tests. Similarly, we are still missing the benefit of a good kicking game. I'd like to see Hodge come into the starting side somewhere primarily for his long boot, but he wouldn't let the side down in general play either. Still some things to work on.
A very gutsy effort by the team and I hope they can build on this game in weeks to come.
