Elsom selection is valid on the basis that he is incumbent captain.

With regards to Vickerman, the arguement seems to be he shouldn't be able to just walk back in and get picked. However, for the world cup side I want Deans to pick the absolute best players available. If Vickerman can get up to speed than that might include him. If not then the others should be picked in front of him.

I can see only positives if the likes of Wykes & Pyle learn that if they want their opportunity than the number 1 criteria is to be consider the best or have the potential to be the best (which I believe applies to Vickerman) option available in their position. At least we are building the sort of depth that we can have these selection problems.

Not really any big surprises, apart from Ma'afu. I wonder what the "behind the scenes" story is with Timani - I hope he really wants to play for the Wallabies, and is not being capped as a speculator. I think he can be very good, if well-mentored by the old heads. Wykes pretty unlucky, Brown also (especially seen in the context that Ma'afu is good enough).

There was another article in the herald today where Robinson said he trained yesterday with Palu who looks to be very fit.
Maybe he is closer than we think. It looks a little centre heavy and light on the wings although some of those are interchangeable.
TPN is supposed to be available at the back end of the Tri Nations.
Gerrard & Maafu?
I guess they all now have an opportunity to make the RWC squad. it is up to them.

P.S. Where does Growden get his material? He was way off the mark again.

Why is Tom Carter not there, yet Fainga'a and Gerrad are?

Here we go...

Seriously though, I think there's already enough hard running centres who are faster in the likes of McCabe, Higginbotham or Fainga'a...

Gerrard might be slow, but I guess he can kick a ball?

Fair selections by the look of it. Maybe Holmes unlucky not be there over Maafu?

I would have thought Gerrard was a fullback option rather than centre. That would make more sense to me.

He may be a jerk, but an excellent player...

It should be noted that Elsom was the only player missing from the Brumbies' awards the other night...

A big lesson from the Reds win is that they had an excellent culture and played for each other.

Maafu getting the nod over virtually any other THP in Oz is a joke. I can see an argument against Baxter as perception is key.

I agree 110% with Cyclo regarding Timani, if he is capped for Oz I hope he is a regular as I want to see him at the highest level for a long time and I don't want to see another Tier 1 cap discarded after 1 season. I would rather he he didn't play for Oz if that were to be the case.

As Lee has often opined, Gerrard has his very strong merits in certain situations. I don't mind seeing him there, and he has played well this year. I doubt he will get a lot of game time, though.

I agree with the bulk of the squad. Yes there are some interesting picks (Ma'afu for example), but I would suspect they will be the ones turfed when the squad is cut in size. There are also some unlucky misses, but that is life. There will always be a few of those in every squad.

Gerrard is the only player othe than ashleycooper that could play 22 in 5-2 bench with giteau. Possibly McCabe. I don't know if deans will try it but bam beau and hodgson all being picked suggests that a 5-2 bench might be on the cards.

The Vickerman issue has been well covered, and the "concerns" about his selection are, of course, valid. I think TheNextBigThing has nailed it - get him into camp and see what he can do in that environment. I mean, he is not a 1 Test newby. There are a few who will start ahead of him, and that is right. It is early days too. If he cuts it now, then having him fit and playing well is a huge asset. If he doesn't, there is time to look further afield, including Wykes. There is certainly no downside to having his brain and experience there, but that is a side issue.

I'm certain McCabe would be preferred as a utility option over Gerrard...

I expect Gerrard to go the way of Maafu and Daley when the squad is cut down...
