I personally think a transfer system would be good, but it doesn't exist yet so it seems irrelevant.

True mate, but if noone starts one it will never come in. As I said I quite happy for him to be released, but can understand why there is a question of fee (if there is).
The other thing everyone seems to forget if he is released for Irish, won't he then probably be required for RC? When he should be playing for Tasman.
By the way didn't AR pay a NH club for an early release for Kane Douglas?? Seem to recall that, but I could very well be wrong.

No, but it’s not a great message to send to other backrowers playing in Oz sides.
Samu looks a good prospect but is unproven at the highest level. Cheika seems to be hot for him because NZ is denying him.

It's when they start throwing around terms like 'compensation' that things get confused. Why would we need to compensate them when there is no loss. I don't get why NZRU pay the domestic clubs 50k when they select a player for the All Blacks?

It only makes sense if the domestic club are obligated to continue paying the player when he is unavailable for selection. The NZRU would then effectively be covering the costs of that players salary, rather than just paying them directly.

Derpus, in order to have a Super Rugby contact you must also either be signed to a Union or have an exemption from NZR (as Taufua & E Dixon have this year). I guess Tasman could wait for Samu to be picked for TRC then sue for breach of contract when he doesn't front for M10 Cup but surely it's better to get it sorted prior to that.

To expand on WOBs point, this is what happens at the provincial level:

"How it works
• All players have to hold a provincial union contract, capped at $55,000.
• Each union is paid $50,000 for every All Black they have in the Rugby Championship squad as compensation for their unavailability.
• If an All Black is available to play in the ITM Cup, his province must pay back some of this money on a pro-rata formula that equates to between $1500-$2000 per game, per player.
• If another contracted ITM Cup player is called up to the All Blacks during Rugby Championship, the province will be compensated on a similar pro-rata, per game basis."

Sounds as though the NZRU are essentially treating Samu as though he was being called into the All Blacks, but, as he would be representing Australia, they're asking the ARU to cover the payment to Tasman.

Except that any theoretical loss is non-existant. Any money they would have paid him is there to be paid to someone else.

Presumably, to meet selection criteria he can sign up for a local team in Canberra.

The above only works where the player has to be in a continued contractual relationship with an ITM Cup team. Samu does not.

I thought Samu was contracted until end of season, and like with Douglas coming back early from Leinster, AR were happy to pay for that contract to be terminated (because Cheika wanted him), so apparently that's what you do.
Genuine question, why is Cheika desperate for him anyway, he only 185cms, wouldn't he be better to go with a taller 6 if he is playing Pooper?
I actually think if Brumbies are telling Cheika and AR they intend to play Pocock etc when Cheika doesn't want them too is miles more important than Samu anyway!

Anyone else notice Chieka's outright lie in the Australian this morning,
"I think we want to have a look at this weekend’s footy, as well,” said Cheika.
“Some of the positions are very tight. The front-row is extremely tight, the back three and the backrow, are very competitive.
“The locks … I know that (Rory) Arnold won’t be available but (Rob) Simmons has been in a rich vein of form these last few weeks and (Izack) Rodda has been playing excellent footy and Adam (Coleman) has been leading well down in Melbourne, so it’s going to be a really good contest for the first 15 spots.”
If positions are tight and this weekend will determine players why would you ask for players to be rested. It is an outright lie because RA doesn't give a crap about the Brumbies. They should rest them ONLY after RA fund them the cost of 15,000 tickets. This statement by Cheika is a deliberate falsehood that must be called out.

Uh huh............

Wessels said he didn’t feel in a position to comment on the Brumbies’ and said the Rebels situation was different as Genia was returning from an injury.

OK Mr Lip Service to cheika
Why don't you rest Coleman, Maddocks, Korobete, Navalu, Hodge, Haylett-Petty, Uelese,
You're playing in Auckland this week, allowing for your travel time, your Rebels players will arrive in Brisbane the same time as the Brumbies

Q 1. Does the province still pay the player his contract salary for not turning up? … i.e. their $55 grand.

Q 2. No mention of June window, when neither Mitre-10 or Soup is on. Samu selected for that, no compensation due?

I find it bizarre that people don't get that the day of the game is significant here.

They work with pretty defined recovery sessions and time before full contact sessions after each game.

It's a full day's difference for the Brumbies players and means you either ignore that advice from your medical and fitness & conditioning staff or you have to hold back key starting XV players (Sio and Pocock at least) from the sessions the rest of the squad are doing.

Clearly there's only going to be a recovery session on Sunday. It's what the players who played on Sunday can do on Monday and Tuesday which is relevant.

Anyway, the Brumbies refusing to rest players is within their rights. I don't think asking them to rest players is anything outrageous though.

I believe so, hence the compensation and the provinces having to 'pay back' the compensation whenever the selected All Blacks play in the NPC.

From my uninformed position, I imagine there's two potential/likely answers to this. First, his Tasman contract will be ended, regardless of whether he plays in the RC. Alternatively, if his Tasman contract remains, the NZRU is likely just trying to cover their costs in case he's also selected for the RC, something they (presumably) would't be able to block if he's capped against Ireland.

It's the short-sighted, irrational and clueless refusal of the Brumbies in this case that's outrageous.

Certainly confirms that, as many of us have long suspected, somewhere not long after RWC 2003 Australian rugby was self-contaminated with a death wish of a type that accelerates exponentially on an annual basis.

Whoa, settle down there Jackie Chiles............

It would be absolutely ludicrous, preposterous, bone-headed and foolish for the Brumbies to shoot themselves in the foot and grant such an irrationally inconceivable request..........

So, they want RA's 50 grand to, in effect, give to Samu.

What a joke!

Just cut out the middle man and have RA pay Samu.

Yep that's all very well kiap, but Tasman have to pay him, it's in his contract I imagine. For Aussie rugby's sake I almost hope there is no agreement, as I not sure he adds enough to make it worthwhile to be seen to pick players who basically are bench players in NZ. Wait until he gets here, pays some rugby and proves he is a starter!

Can I ask a question, has anyone heard that Samu has asked for a release from Tasman? I certainly haven't, which I can understand as he loses $50,000 potentially, so I can see why someone has to pay something!

Brumbies should just run off their Wallabies early if they have a sizeable lead over the Sunwolves B team.
