Brown and Hoiles instead of Mowen and Houston. Robbie Deans either knows more than everyone on this board or less.

A couple of wow! selections in Chisholm and Cummins, too.

I really have never understood what Robbie is trying to do. Not ever. And I don't understand what he says either.
Imagine a press conference with Robbie, Genia and Sharpe - Eastern Mysticism, cliches and F-bombs!!

haha so true. He seems to have a speech problem, takes him forever to get out a sentence.

I actually think Cummins is pretty good, big, fast, aggressive. Totally different style of winger than Davies, but not crap.

Well. Unlike almost everyone here on the boards, they managed to pick a squad I disagree with. :angryfire:

Richard Brown
Stephen Hoiles
Pek Cowan
Mark Chisholm
and to a lesser extent Edmonds

Not sure how to justify Nick Cummins or Slipper in the BaaBaas either.

It's a really odd mix of conservatism and reliance on youth, and back to front. And doesn't reward form in S14. :nta:

Slipper is an amazing young prop, always has been. No complaints from me there.

But what is the go with Chisolm, Edmonds, Hoiles, Brown. These players are just not up to it.

Van has been robbed, so has Pat McCabe & Houston.

I can only assume there is a :sharpe: quota required to be filled.

Is Hoiles the second most experienced number 8 in the country, behind Palu? Its not that bad. I would have no problem with playing Hoiles against Fiji.

That said, I'd have no objections having Houston at 8 against Fiji either.

Yeh the selection of hoiles isnt that bad, as u mentioned above he is the second most experienced number 8 in the country. But IMO why pick him when palu is just going to come back and be first choice, why not put in some-one with more potential and development, mowen or even houston.

He's not a bad player but i dont think he deserves wallabies selection. I would have picked Davies if he wasnt injured. But If you want a big, fast, aggressive winger then McCabe comes to mind first. He was outstanding at the brumbies in nearly every match, great under pressure, nearly no errors, always has go-forward, great defence.

McCabe is solid and safe and collects defenders but Cummins has more potential as an actual winger and scores tries.

No Al Baxter ? Makes sense if they're looking to 2011.

Cummins is McCabe with talent. He's quality at centre as well, so is perfect bench cover.

Selectors did a good job but the talent is underwhelming. We lack quality up front. Too many seagulls.

Once Brown came back from his injury around round 7 or 8, he has looked very very good.
I think he is a lot better than most people seem to remember him. He had a problem with discipline, but I dont remember him getting pinged too often in the S14s. And with palu out we need someone to stand up.

The players I am most disappointed with are Chisholm, Hoiles and Edmonds. The first too are proven non-performers at test level (but at least Hoiles had a good S14s, Chisholm did not) and Edmonds, while otten described as the best replacement hooker going around, is not. He doesnt do the tough stuff.

Id have had Houston in for Hoiles, Fitzpatrick in for Edmonds (lets get the next generation of Faainga and Fitzpatrick up to speed, not stop gaps like Edmonds) and Mowen in for Chisholm.

Oh and I would have tried to fit Kingi in there (Turner is on U20 duties no?)

But when our injuries come back, that team will look very good.

Robbie was itching to work with Cummins last year on the Spring Tour but he broke. I think it's a call up about potential more than current form.

Chisholm, wtf? I would have be tempted to leave him out all together. He is certainly behind Douglas and Chapman. I would of even put Wykes or Hockings in the squad above him purely off potential.

Also I disagree with all you and your Hoiles bashing, he isn't amazing but I think he deserves one last crack a year out from the WC. That way you can write him off with full confidence.

It's good to see all Australian provinces contributing almost the same amount of players to the Baa Baas/ Wallabies set up.

Hopefully the Rebels can do the same next season.

Adn we are a little short in the loosehead department at the moment.

We have Daley and Cowen in the squad. But Robinson is out, Alexander is a tighthead, Dunning has gone backwards, etc. Which is interesting because we were short in the tighthead only last year and now we have Alexander, Baxter, Weeks, Fairbrother, Maafu.

So 40 picked. Obviously 22 in the test squad, leaving 18 for the baabaas. So do you think test bench players will play for Ozzie A or just double up and sit on the bench again? I think perhaps the latter.

From that team, I am now thinking (assuming strongest possible team from this squad, ie all fit):

Wallabies:

15 Adam Ashley-Cooper
14 Drew Mitchell
13 Rob Horne
12 Matt Giteau
11 Digby Ioane
10 Quade Cooper
9 Will Genia
8 Rocky Elsom
7 David Pocock
6 Matt Hodgson
5 Nathan Sharpe
4 Dean Mumm
3 Laurie Weeks
2 Tatafu Polota-Nau
1 Ben Alexander

16 Saia Fainga'a
17 Ben Daley
18 Mark Chisholm
19 Richard Brown
20 Luke Burgess
21 James O’Connor
22 Peter Hynes

Barbarians

15 Kurtley Beale
14 Lachie Turner
13 Will Chambers
12 Anthony Fainga'a
11 Nick Cummins
10 Berrick Barnes [c]
9 Josh Valentine
8 Stephen Hoiles [vc]
7 Pat McCutcheon
6 Ben McCalman
5 Kane Douglas
4 Rob Simmons
3 Salesi Ma’afu
2 Huia Edmonds
1 Pekahou Cowan

16 Damien Fitzpatrick
17 James Slipper
18 Mitchell Chapman
19 Richard Brown
20 Luke Burgess
21 James O’Connor
22 Peter Hynes

I get why guys like Cummins and Edmonds were picked. Robbie wants 40 or 50 guys to pick from next year for the WC squad rather than 25 or 30 then filling the rest with whoever. It makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is Chisholm's selections. He hasn't been up to scratch and he is taking up a spot that 2 or 3 younger more inform locks could take. Sure the other options aren't world beaters either but you have to invest in development.

That selection just pisses me off.

It appears he has selected the main squad 50/50 decisions based on incumbency (eg Chisholm/Douglas) , with the Baabaas players given a chance to push their case. I'd love to see a few internal trials to pit these sides against each other.
