What is "incumbency"? Is it "played half a dozen tests because the first choice option was injured"? I don't think so.

I think it should be something more like "first choice and performed" or "stepped up and performed to a high standard over a number of games".

I certainly wouldn't pick him in the matchday 23 right now (and Mowen certainly deserves to be selected ahead of him) but the reality is the form gap has closed and comments about his 2012 tests don't really stack up in my opinion as Higgers has played more tests and struggled to dominate as well.

The difference is that Higgers, prior to his injury, had not only been in career-best form, but was also playing a tighter, harder game than he had in the past. Previously, he's been great in Super Rugby but his wider game at the Reds didn't translate upwards as well, leading to some disappointing performances in gold. This year he's been playing differently, IMO, as well as better. Dennis is essentially the same guy.

Like a few others selected that are a bit controversial, Phipps is in arguably better Super Rugby form than when last selected. I would prefer White as well but don't think this is a howler.

I don't really get the criticism of Deans in potentially selecting players like Beale and Burgess.

I think Beale will definitely be selected but I'm not sure about Burgess yet.

If the coach thinks they are amongst the players he wants in his team and they are available for selection then he should pick them. It isn't the coaches responsibility to decide who deserves and who doesn't deserve selection.

It is the ARU's responsibility to determine if these players are available for selection. If they don't want Burgess selected above a regular Super Rugby player then they should change their policy.

If they don't want Beale selected because of his indiscretions then they should suspend him.

I don't think the coach should ever be in the position of having to make moral judgements with their selections.

I actually think Fardy does well as a scrummaging lock and his breakdown work is amazing. Probably bit underrated and a bit overrated depending on your state.

But he shouldn't be selecting someone like Burgess on the mere basis that he's available.........

Passes that go behind a player are not generally a style of play most teams want to utilise, but I guess Deans is two steps ahead of the rest of us...

Stupid comment that contributes nothing. Can we please keep discussion somewhat intelligent and not resort to this rubbish that only starts a slanging match.
