Wallabies 2024

I am really looking forward to watching Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i play. He might take a little bit to reapply his trade at the international level however he is exactly what we need in the backline. I big body who can get over the advantage line. It doesn't matter if he is full back or inside center he can swap and change as needed with Tom Wright who finally has shown his potential and has been the best so far this year in an under per forming backline. I am on record as saying a number of years back that I thought Wright could of made a terrific fly-half though it is to late for that now. I still however stick to what I said back then it is a shame that he was never given the opportunity there as he could of also been exactly what the Wallabies needed now.
Will he get the ball with Lolesio there? If he’s our best 10 I’ll give it up. Marcus Smith will destroy him.

There's no reason why Wright can't join the back line as a second distributor, especially if we pick two big centres. KB (Kurtley Beale) did it from the wing back in in RWC2015.

Are Wright's hands that good? I haven't watched this aspect of his play much, as a wing he didn't pass much and at FB I've been too focused on poor defensive reads to notice his passing ability.

Yeah they are. Very quick

Iv'e wanted to see him play 12 in any sort of game and see what he does. He may have only had a short stint with Manly in the NRL but they wouldn't have put a kid out there at five-eighth (6) who doesn't. Des might be mad as a cut snake but he knows footy players and developed some big times halves in league.

I totally disagree. Wright seems to refuse to pass. Watch his games for the Wallabies this year and he will take the ball himself almost every time. He has the ability, having played 10 in the past and 6 for Manly in the NRL. If he improved his passing game I feel he would hit another level as the defender wouldn't be sure what he's going to do and it would open up opportunities for himself and the players outside him.

He played a couple of trial matches at 12 in his first season with the Brumbies and he looked to have all the skills. But I wouldn't be moving him from fullback any time soon.

Well, one thing we know for certain now is that Jets is not Corey Toole, despite the non de plume.

I was referring to Wallabies games. I know he has the ability and does it at Super level.

Actually quickly went back and watched the first half of last test. Had a couple of chances to pass to Kellaway and chose to go himself both times, the second one I feel he should have passed and every other time probably took the correct option, outside of the pass to touch when he made the break out and ironically should have held it. I'm happy to say that my perception was harsh on him.

One thing that I hadn't noticed before is how often he is behind the first pod of forwards, directing them where to run. Would like the 10 to do this and have him out wider but was interesting to see.

EOYT "Pass Mark".

There has been some suggestion that anything goes here. I'd suggest that finishing the tour at a lessor ranking than our current ranking would NOT have met the mark. That could mathematically be a very real result. Falling outside the top #10 and fronting the BIL could have long term repercussions. I'd suggest a pass mark requires some improvement and definitely not stepping further backwards.

There was a global talent scout on the sidelines at Scots College on July 27, 2019, watching play unfold in a Sydney schoolboys rugby game.

Scots were leading Kings 15-0 at halftime.

Then Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i decided something needed to happen. The Kings player stopped waiting for the ball out wide and came looking for action.

“It was extraordinary, he was 15 years old, and he just owned the game,” the scout said.

Sua'ali'i scored a brilliant individual try, and set up another. In the end, Scots held on for a 15-14 victory.

“But it was clear he was the best player on the field by a mile,” said the scout, who then decided to follow Sua'ali'i’s games.

“I saw the Curry brothers (Tom and Ben) who now play for England, at Oundle (College in Northamptonshire), they were exceptional.

“Rieko Ioane at Auckland Grammar was a freak, Victor Vito at Scots College Wellington was a freak. Beauden Barrett in New Plymouth, you knew he was going to be something, fast, skilful.

“But I have never seen a better talent on a schoolboy rugby field than Joseph, anywhere in the world.”

The scout never could get Sua'ali'i’s signature. But he still stands by his assessment today.

So when the news emerged that Sua'ali'i would be picked to start for the Wallabies in his international debut against England, just four weeks after his first training session with the squad, questions surrounding the decision need to be considered with this history in mind.

Sua'ali'i has risen to every challenge presented in his career thus far, so why would the 21-year-old buckle now?

There have been claims that selecting him cheapens the Wallabies jersey.

But the Sydney Roosters asked the NRL for a special age-restriction dispensation to allow him to play first grade as a 17-year-old. Did that cheapen the Roosters jersey? Hardly.
