Wallabies 2024

So, any ideas on who those fast developing wingers might be? Jorgensen presumably might be one, but probably being considered for 15 rather than wing. Corey Toole is being mentioned by many, but his defence (one on one tackling) at present would need to improve. I think Dylan Pietsch is ready to step up to this level. He is a classical winger imo and wouldn't let the side down at all. Long Term, I like the look of Angus Staniforth, but it would be too early in 2024 despite maturing early and arriving quickly.

I have some misgivings about Andrew Kellaway at 15 but if he can make that spot his, then both Petaia and Wright are right in contention for those wing spots. But both have some drawbacks.

EDIT : with a back three of Petaia, Kellaway and Wright, who kicks us out of trouble or wins a dual with the opposition? Who, precisely, has a Jack Debreczini boot?
For this year it's probably those you've mentioned, but part of coming from the clouds is that you don't necessarily see them coming. All it takes is one red hot season for that to happen. As a result they don't need to be as complete as they have the benefit of being an unknown. Often they will have "2nd year syndrome" though, particularly when other teams start to work them out and target their weaknesses - something that may well happen to Nawaqanitawase this year.

On the kicking Petaia has a big boot but it needs work, Wright and Kellaway are probably a step or two behind him. That might be the one bonus of them all playing fullback for Super - they'll all be working hard on that aspect of the game. We may also end up dropping out 10 back a fair bit as well, but that might depend more on the coach and how they want to play. I would like to see Campbell get a good season at 15 though, he was solid on his brief time for the Wallabies in 22 so if he can demonstrate the same in Super I see no reason he can't make his way back in.

Did he? Toole was amazing on attack this year, and Mark wasn’t even in Rennies plans at all until the Australian A games late last year
You could not be showing your bias any harder. Mark walked into the Wallabies backline after his 2 try matches against Wales in 2022. Since then he has been the waratahs most consistent player for 2023. Toole has played 2 Australia A matches and scored 1 try. Your comparing a Lexus to a ferrari mate.

Petaia's boot was coming along quite well I thought when given licence to kick at the Reds.

What is our ranking after the RWC debacle? 9th?

We can't afford to be putting out a development Wallabies. It needs to be our best 23 every game irrespective of contract arrangements post 2024 for guys like Nawaqanitawase.

Of course, our best 23 will depend on where the HC head is at and how he wants to play the game etc. Someone like Mark may or may not be in the 23 for the specific HC, whoever it is.

As an example, I'm still sceptical of Big Will playing for the Wallabies in 2024. He might be individually one of our best players, but the impact on training and game plan requirements due to his availability - well I'm not convinced the Coach will necessarily see our best 23 as including the guy with those limitations.

Most of the is discussion is somewhat premature - coaches first.

With respect to Mark - all the best mate, hope you do return.

2022 was indeed last year, so I’m unsure what part of my comment you are refuting?

My point is we didn’t know he was capable of until he was given the chance. Writing off Toole just seems weird to me, as if he is incapable of improving as a player

And Mark has 2 try’s in 5 games for Australia A, is that a Ferrari?

Not picking one winger doesn’t make it a development XV….

When did i ever write off toole, i mentioned that his defense needs a lot of work as he was targeted in super rugby. Am i right or wrong? Your obsession with Australia A games is weird.

“You’re comparing a Lexus to a Ferrari mate”

I’m of the belief that Toole can be a Ferrari, you can’t teach what he has. The fact he actually wants to be a Wallaby is an added bonus

Despite being tainted with the Jones' brush, I think Matt Faessler is very effective and reliable (feels like Porecki 2.0 (agreed) not the worst thing)

Lonergan needs a haircut before he can be considered a serious test number 2
Not at all. I don't think Porecki has done a bad job he's just always going to be in the good not great category. You'll never win anything major without a couple world class players in the 2,9,10,15 or have extreme depth to drive improvement and have the option to drop and pick guys on form like SA, NZ can.

Lonergan to get the start if he comes out looking like Forrest Gump and less Lieutenant Dan post war?

I would definitely have Pietsch ahead of Filipo in the wing stakes. It surprises me that so many posters here think we have depth at wing. I reckon it's one of the spots we are desperately short of quality.
I agree - we have numbers but its more of a logjam of average players hoping to get a shot - BUT, Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase) went from below average to wallaby star very quickly so it CAN HAPPEN.

Kinda like the shitfight for the 3rd LHP & THP spots

Whoever is in form and looks the best fit to be a "test hooker" ie appears they can do the fundamentals at test level (scrum, hit his jumpers and not miss tackles)

Set piece is the key and not f*cking up

I'd agree with that. I'd be in favour of a message going out to the Super Rugby Hookers saying most accurate thrower gets a guaranteed spot in the top Wallabies training squad. It's such a flaw right down to the U20s last year.

I'm afraid I'm just not in the Eddie Jones 'lets pick a team for 2027' camp. As far as I'm concerned, you try to win every test you play, and one of the crucial aspects of that is to pick the best possible team available. Wallaby jumpers mustn't be 'every child player wins a prize', every player must earn them, and on every occasion that means they must be part of the best 23 we can deliver.
I know some of you will argue against this concept, quite frankly I don't care and won't waste everyone else's time by going back and forth to argue the point. But for mine, if Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase) is the best winger we have for any given test in 2024, he gets picked, if not he doesn't, end of story. Shout me down all you like, don't care.

This is even more emphatic given our trend currently accelerated to debacle. We are in position to be taking liberities.
