Wallabies 2023

I might have missed an explanation somewhere but what is the rationale for Tupou to be changing squads? What is the difference between playing vs Tonga as opposed to vs Argentina?

I think Eddie's Japan tenure was the definition of making the most of what you've got

I get that it was a dreadful start, but Eddie has coached the greatest upset in international rugby history, won a World Cup as an assistant coach and taken two other nations to World Cup finals
One Swallow does not a summer make. The Japanese culture also aided what was achieved in that great try.

Yes, TT he's done that. However, he previously took over a Wallabies side that held the WC, The Tri-nations (as the TRC then was), the Bledisloe Cup, the Cook Cup and the Mandela Trophy. By the time he left we had lost every one. He then went on to take the Reds to their first and only last place in Super Rugby!
Few remember that Froggy.

Just a genuine question regarding the kick-chase, which most other top level teams seem way better at than us.
Is it because our chasers just don't make the effort? Is it because the kicks are just poorly timed and poorly placed? Is it because no-one is aware the kick is on and is in a position to chase? Perhaps some combination of all three? I'd be keen to hear other's take on it.

In this game I think most of them were just poorly executed. They were going way too deep to allow us to compete for the ball. A telling factor was that only a couple of them allowed us to lay a tackle immediately (the next best thing after being able to compete for the ball).

Back 3 only kicking 3 times is a big issue. Think that will change this week. I’d like to see Wright moved to the wing, he’s brilliant but just can’t help himself so against good teams can have brain farts and Kellaway to 15.

I don't think this was because they ran it from everywhere instead. It's primarily because most of South Africa's long kicks were to touch not keeping the ball in play. They combined contestable kicks with kicks for touch.

We only kicked twice more than South Africa (and that includes the Gordon grubber at the end etc.) but most people's perception of the game was probably that we kicked the ball way more than South Africa did.

Weird way to frame it. He retained the Bledisloe in 2001 and 2002, won the Tri nations in 2001 and went into extra time of the final in the 2003 World cup. He also won a Super Rugby title and coached Australia A to a win over the Lions

Every coach has failures, Steve Hansen holds the World Record for consecutive Tests lost as coach of Wales, he's not as Good as Jason Gilmore either I suppose

Pack too large?

Our two big French based locks play in probably the best comp in the world laden with massive humans and they continually kick the shit out of it
I know that, but in France the wingers chase hard and compete for more contestable kicks. They do it on a weekly basis.
I understand to compete we need a large pack and I want us to adopt whatever tactics make the big guys successful there.
I was more meaning if we pick a large pack at altitude and continually use the tactic of kicking to the opponents we aren’t going to get the best out of the massive pack we pick. Unless of course we kick more intelligently and chase harder.

We could pick more than one winger who will chase kicks ............................. that may help

This has been a thing for a long time - I can't recall a game in the last 20 years where we've had a decent kick - chase game. So many aimless kicks with either no or just lazy chasers.

Is the Aus A vs Tonga going to be streamed? Can't find it anywhere on stan

Doesn't seem like it.

Here's the Tongan team. A pretty useful side.
