Wallabies 2023

How many outside backs do we carry with us? I wonder if Kellaway and Petaia's versatility is now pushing Hodge out. I know they can't cover 10 or 12 but they've got 11,13,14,15 nicely.

You certainly can't discount Hodge's versatility, and I feel like Perese will be the big omission with so much outside back talent and with Hodge, Kellaway and Petaia able to cover 13...

Do you have Foketi in the squad as a backup Centre?

I feel like Foketi and Perese might be playing off for 1 spot. Perese is starting to play some good footy.

Hodge's best chance to make the RWC squad is if we only take two 10s and/or we want a 6:2 bench "specialist".

14 or 15 backs seems like the likely number.

White/Lonergan/McDermott
Cooper/Foley
Kerevi/Ikitau/Foketi/Hodge
Koroibete/Wright/Kellaway/Petaia/Nawaqanitawase

Yeah, I still think the only way we go without one of Hodge and O'Connor is if they're both injured. At this stage Hodge is pretty solidly in front, though O'Connor's time at 12 is probably helping his case.

I reckon BH is nailed the most likely selections in the backs... Foketi would probably be the frontrunner to backup Kerevi at inside centre.

There is still plenty of games left for Perese to make a case.

Is this on a 31 size squad or 33?

Your choices are exactly what I'd take. Depending on OS restrictions, maybe Gordon over Foley.

33.

We took 14 backs in a squad of 31 last time but quite a lot of teams only took 13 backs.

I figure it will most likely be 14 again because the extra spots will be used on forwards (definitely a 6th prop vs the 5 we took last time) and probably one other.

How many games has he played this year? Was he included in Eddie's camp? Would love for him to feature.
I believe he was listed as unavailable due to injury on the original squad naming. I'd say there's not a lot in it between Foketi, Paisami and Perese at the moment. Foketi is absolutely in front but form and even minor injuries can change things quickly. Flook still a smokey there depending on the cover Eddie wants for 13 vs 12, but it would likely take an injury or two for him to make it. A bit may hang on Kerevi's return too, if he doesn't make it back Perese's chances go way up as the player most able to bring a power game in the absence of Kerevi.

Yeah this is it. Either Hodge or JOC (James O'Connor) will make it as the 3rd 10 to play against Portugal.

I actually think Pietsch could be a bolter over Mark N (Nawaqanitawase). He has such a low error rate, makes his tackles, carries hard and most importantly, is very good at the breakdown. He's probably more suited to Test rugby. I think he has an edge over the next guys who would be Toole & Vunivalu.

Given how injury prone Foketi, Perese and Hunter have been over the last few years. I wouldn't be wasting a spot on them just yet, you'd be hard press to not give it to a Hodge or JOC (James O'Connor) who cover the 10/12 channel for you.

huh?

Both one of [ Foketi/Perese/Paisami ] and [ JO'C/Hodge ] are making the squad.

I often think that past history has too much of an impact on current selection rather than picking on current form.

That being said, has Hodge ever let down the team, even at last minute notice playing out of position? He would have to be one of the first bench spots picked and as backup to the backup 10 he needs to be picked.

Within the last fortnight we’ve gotten confirmation that Skelton and Koroibete are in the frame but nothing on Kerevi - pure speculation but I think his chances of a Wallaby return are drifting.

Eddie was in Japan recently were any comments made public?

When is he back playing?

I know he’s a world class player but I worry about how he’ll be going without much footy. It’s clearly taken Perese almost 10 games to look threatening again.

Our 10 & 12 both coming off major leg injuries…

He was down as TBC but was named as someone who was going to join the recent camp via video linkup.
