Wallabies 2023

Darren Coleman is a backs coach, he's a great option to could replace Wisemantel I reckon. Phil Blake is a former leaguey - Eddie might look at him as an option - you fellas remember how strong the Wallabies defense was under him?

The most important assistant to Eddie's going to be the set-piece coach. Poor set-pieces have been a constant in Eddie's coaching career; I pray and hope the ARU are cognisant of this weakness and insist on a proper appointment.

Any suggestions?

It's still not clear if they are keeping du-Plessis on. I would bring in Palmer.

A backs coach specifically?

We have this narrative that Eddie got rid of him, with little actual facts and a load of supposition

With the same facts, the new coach requires more commitment in time (away from home) than the assistant coach was prepared to deliver.

Coaching the Wobs (and playing for the wobs) is a big commitment in being on the road, away from home, it just doesn't suit everybody
Fisher was moved on as he is not the type to take BS from Eddie. Podcast 49 gave foresight to a potential issue with Eddie & Laurie and it has come to fruition. You don't let well credentialed & respected coaches like Laurie go unless you can't work together.

Shame about Laurie Fisher, always liked him. Larkham has not shown any prowess as a 'backs coach' unless his Irish experience is different to what he showed in Australia, just because he was a good player himself doesn't mean he is going to be a good backs coach - hopefully he can prove me wrong with the Brumbies but I wouldn't be elevating him further yet.

He's far from on his own in earning them though - in addition to Coleman's red Creevy, Donnell and Loader have all picked up a red card. And that's before you get to the yellows - Simmons has 4 of those this season.

Simmons? Lots of yellow cards from shit-for-brains moments?

I for one, am astonished

Defense and breakdown are interconnected, they go hand in hand mate. Scott Robertson became an assistant coach for Canterbury in his 30's shortly after he retired from playing where he spent many seasons coaching Canterbury's defense & breakdown after Robbie Deans told him to go specialize in one area. Canterbury won 6 consecutive NPC titles (2008-2013) while he was in charge of that area. Razor is the breakdown and defensive expert, as he learnt off the best, including the master Richie during his playing days.

So there's a clear solution for Laurie's replacement, Razor to coach D & breakdown as a temporary appointment for 2023 after Super season finishes, Nuicifora is the next best option being the breakdown king but he's unavailable until next year, Simon Cron perhaps?

I think I’ve figured this out - you’re Ian Foster, aren’t you?

Being a bit more serious, I reckon our best chance of winning the Bled and the WC this year is to develop a fetish about defence.

When Jason Robinson skinned Latham on the wing in the the Lions opener, when we were at our peak, the commentators weren’t raving about our try scoring, it was ‘the greatest defence in the world has been lacerated’.

This team is more than good enough at set piece and scoring tries when they’re switched on, but are extremely inconsistent in defence, which discipline is part of. Good defence also disrupts opposition attacking plays, so it’s a proactive strategy. Nothing puts an inside back a bit too deep in the pocket than having to try and reflate his lungs early in a match.

I reckon Vunivalu’s entire pay since signing with union should be garnished and then spent on getting the best defence coach/es in the game on our staff, and anything spare to be pumped into coaching academies around the country.

God I am beginning to dislike "appraisals" that make no attempt to be up to date. I haven't watched Bernie is Europe either but I do welcome the on-going development of one of ours. It's great to see him back, and if the WB coaching is to enmesh Super coaches (not really comfortable with that but) he would be mandatory.
