Wallabies 2023

What the reason behind Donaldson being added only as a 'development player/training extra' and not an 'official squad member', I've seen it specifically spelled out like that and the point of difference made a few times in the media.

Does it mean Donaldson doesn't get payments for being part of the squad? On that, are all players who are in the squad given additional Rugby Australia payments or is it only match fees?

My understanding is that you only get paid extra for match fees. He will be on his Waratahs payments unless he has a Wallaby top up, which contrary to common belief isn't much unless you are a regular member of the match day 23

Yeh it seems a bit strange, the wording of it all

He has been picked for developmental purposes and is now part of the squad, so just call him a squad member. Maybe they’re afraid of upsetting JOC (James O'Connor), dropped for a rookie!

Wasn’t James dropped for Foley? I agree though it does seem a little strange.

It was mentioned last week that Donaldson and/or Edmed would be brought in to train with the squad… maybe Edmed might come in to when club commitments are finished?

But they bring in players to train with the squad all the time, so when someone like Donaldson is actually required that experience helps.

What use is keeping JOC (James O'Connor) in the squad if he’s not going to be in the 23, he doesn’t need the squad experience.

And before you say well he could pass on his experience/professionalism to the young guys, maybe that’s the problem.

Qwerty, That's a bit rough on JOC (James O'Connor) who has been a great servant of Australian rugby after being a total dh as a youngster. This is the first game where I could say he didn't play a decent game but there were few who did. It was cumulative madness that the Wallabies are prone to doing and they are on rarer occasions known to blow teams away ie AB in Perth.
The W's are totally unreliable and they have been since McQueens time and no coach or new players or just about anything a rational man can suggest has changed them. To point the finger at JOC (James O'Connor) is poor in my opinion.

So it has got to the point where Rennie is forced to bring in one of the 'other' youngsters. This is piss poor IMHO, he should have been doing this from the time he brought in QC (Quade Cooper) or earlier. Makes me wonder if the guy can ID talent when it doesn't shine in a Super Rugby team with a bunch of capable forwards doing their job ie Brumbies.
Many posters here claim it's too late to bring on a youngster apart from Noah. This is a form of conventional madness. In the current state we are in regarding 10's. he should have been bringing in those with talent and seeing if any look the goods. At the least to protect the future (and his) which now looks bleak- Again.

If only there had been some test like matches this year where these young, uncapped fly halves could have shown their capabilities…

They are being “brought in” to observe the group and see how it all works. I can recall this happening on and off for a very long time with up and coming stars and league converts before they are actually ready to be considered for test footy.
Its no big deal, Just Rennie looking ahead.

They did play for Australia A against Tonga Samoa and Fiji?

I would argue bringing in young 10s is a bit different though.

Donaldson and possibly in a few weeks Edmed aren't being brought along to make up the numbers at training. We have a current issue at flyhalf, and essentially a number of good young players lining up to take the spot over the next few years. I'd argue these 10s being brought in are very much on trial, see how they adapt and maybe even running at 10 a few times with the main squad.

Who knows, if Donaldson doesn't impress (and it seems Rennie has been placing some value on training performances) we might see the likes of Carter Gordon or another flyhalf given the same opportunity next year.
