Wallabies 2020

Wilson

Phil Kearns (64)
I just mentioned this in the brumbies thread, is rather see McKellar coaching Australia A outside of the super season and staying with the brumbies otherwise. It'd be less disruptive and just as good for his development, and the wallabies can get a more specialised forwards coach.

This relies on Australia A becoming a thing again, but I thought I read recently that they were planning on doing just that.

Aren't the seasons completely separate now? What's the issue with doing both - potential bias?

I think its important to have your national coaching set up agnostic to provinces. How much hyperbole did we hear about Chiek's NSW affiliations.

Also, just because the two seasons are discrete doesn't mean the National Coaching set up have nothing to do other than twiddle thumbs during the Super Rugby season.

ps. too many tahs.

Doesn't solve the problem of not having a Wallabies forward coach though!

Uh huh

McKellar is still young for a coach, and it's not like he's going to stop being Australian if they don't snap him up so I don't see why there's any urgency in bringing him into the national setup at the expense of a super rugby side.

What is the ARU afraid of? That he'll finish up with the Brumbies then go overseas? Great! Imagine the Wallabies signing a head coach with international coaching experience. Wouldn't that be a treat?

Also, in that role you’d want Fisher to be going around to the other teams, as well as imparting his wisdom on the junior/schoolboy setups.........

No, but McKellar probably isn't this best candidate in terms of coaching the wallabies forwards either. With attack and defence covered I'd much rather see them get a couple of technical specialists each covering some combination of scrum/lineout/ruck/maul.

Wilson, last thing I want to see is McKellar moving on from the Brumbies in the next 2 or 3 years. But if a team was looking for a specialist coach covering the maul, then Dan is the Man.

Time to make bold early calls on what wallaby squad could look like

Props: for the 23 3As, Sio, slipper and Tupou but for wider squad would add HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) and bell (later as development player)
Hookers: faiginaa (sorry forget how to spell islander names) for 23 and mafi with arangi and uslesse for wider squad
Locks: Rodda, philips and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) for 23 - Blythe, Simmons and hocking for wider squad
Back row: Hooper, Valetini, Wright, Nasarini for 23 Hardwick, Samu and Wilson for wider squad
Half: white, lowrens for 23 - Powell,Gordon and mcdermott for wider squad
Fly half: To'omua for 23 (JOC (James O'Connor) is backup in 23): Lolesio wider squad
Centres: JOC (James O'Connor), TK, and Hodge for the the 23 ; meakes and Simone for wider squad (concern is centre depth options as don’t think either Simone or meakes test standard but what are better options?
Wings: Koroibete, Maddocks, Wright for 23, Speight for wider squad
FB: DHP starting with banks on bench for 23 (but flip of a coin who could start out of these two) Wider squad Beale and possibly jock Campbell

I would include Will Harrison at flyhalf rather than Noah Lolesio.
Harrison if keeps playing as well as last night might agree but in terms of season to date Noah ahead - but both fine young players and nice to see some talent coming through at 10 after years recycling Quade and foley for lack of better options
