It seems to me that the Wallabies of today are exactly the kind of challenge Jones would relish; a formerly great side at its lowest ebb, sitting outside the top five, but with a tonne of young talent, a recent schoolboys world championship title, and a burgeoning national comp. All with the added advantage of flying under the radar to begin with because nobody in Australia likes rugby anymore, but with the possibility of drawing thousands of fickle fans back in with a few trophies.

All the ingredients are there for some immediate success, I'd have thought it'd be a very attractive proposition.

Well, not according to the Cheika apologists at the time. When the tide was changing about 18 months ago to get rid of Cheika, some posters were then adamant that it was too late, a song they then kept singing right through to the Cup.

It was never too late but it was certainly too expensive.

Which Schoolboys World Championship ? 20’s were runners up , 18’s-schools beat NZ not SA or any other school sides of note?

I think one thing Eddie learned after the Wallabies 2003 almost-success, is not to overstay his welcome. He could have stayed in Japan post 2015 to build on that success and ride a wave of popularity, but he decided to move on.

He was sacked after the disastrous EOYT in 2005

Well, not according to the Cheika apologists at the time. When the tide was changing about 18 months ago to get rid of Cheika, some posters were then adamant that it was too late, a song they then kept singing right through to the Cup.

There were lots of reasons not to.

- the cost of getting rid of the contracted coach and potentially assistant coaches.
- the available replacements 18 months out from a RWC (or lack thereof).

The concept that we could have recruited a top shelf coach "out of cycle" and been able to do so without paying through the nose and offering a longer than ideal tenure is seems pretty unrealistic to me.

So if your answer to the question of whether RA should have blown an extra $1m or thereabouts to sack Cheika and employ a caretaker coach just to the end of 2019 is yes, then I guess RA should have done that. Personally I think it would have been a waste of money unlikely to produce a better result.

I'm not too despondent about our flyhalf stocks.
Have a look at Ntamack for France. Absolute class player and I bet he'll be haunting us for a decade to come, he's only born in 1999. He was playing at the u20 world cup earlier this year, then made the transition smoothly to top grade rugby. Our starting flyhalf for the next RWC might still be finishing high school right now.

Isaac Lucas and Will Harrison both looked on the same level as Ntamack at the JRWC. They need to be shown a bit of faith.

And I just think after the Cheika era we need a steady hand on the wheel. I don't think Eddie is that man.

He turned the Brumbies around from a low point too and helped developed the games of Mogg, To'omua, Lilo, White etc.

I really liked his comments around Mogg too - although he was firing he came out and said it was probably still too soon for a Test debut for him. He was right. Shows he understands Test rugby compared to super xv (something Cheika doesn't seem to)

I don't think getting the Brumbies to a Super Rugby final in 2013 is a compelling item on his CV to become head coach of the Wallabies in 2020.

I think Rennie is pretty close to being locked in but White certainly wouldn't be top of my recruitment list.

He also has winning the world cup on his CV. Then backed that up with the Brumbies - which shows he can still coach in the modern game.

Not sure what he getting up to now though.

Rennie has international experience from what I'm told. I just fear another Robbie Deans in this instance.

That EJ (Eddie Jones)'s Test w-l ratio with England since 2016 is ~ 80% doesn't impress you? IMO over nearly 4 years, that is his greatest achievement thus far, up there with the very best in those terms, and, like it or not, winning a lot is what matters in pro sports.

Has Rennie had international experience before? His CV looks a bit bare to me. Do we ever bring in a HC with prior international experience? Don't know why other countries do and we don't.
