I don't think McCaffrey did his chances much good on the weekend. I'm not sure he would have been picked anyway as I don't think he was included in the leadup camps but he didn't impress or have impact against essentially a test pack. I thought the level looked a bit above him.

I reckon this is a pretty clear summary of why McCaffrey isn't getting a look in. They don't think he would step up to the next level.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Cooper, Phipps and Hanigan aren't in this initial squad. I can only assume that none of them are in the selection frame moving forward and I think that's smart selecting. Cooper's best days are behind him, as are Phipps. Hanigan just hasn't done anything to make himself stand out. I can't help but wonder whether any (or all) of the above would have made the cut if it weren't for the new selection panel.

The selection of Lilo is a nice story and bang on. He's had a really good season and he's a genuine 10 with test experience.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is probably the only head scratcher for me. He's hardly been playing down the house this season. I'd have the likes of JOC (James O'Connor) ahead of him in a second but I can only assume that given JOC (James O'Connor)'s very late arrival they didn't consider him for selection.

Obviously, they don't rate Hodge as a 13 or they'd have him as the back up 13 and there'd be no need for AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper).

Hodge's best games this season have been at 15 (where he was pretty good), he is quite average everywhere else

Latu and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) are the problems for me.
Latu has a 2 cent head and while he could do something brilliant he could also have a massive brain fart and lose us a game.
AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is just not the player he used to be and simply has not impressed this year at all.

On another matter, a squad breakdown:

Brumbies : 6 forwards + 4 backs = 10
Waratahs : 6 + 3 = 9
Rebels : 3 + 6 = 9
Reds : 4 + 1 = 5
Exeter Chiefs : 0 + 1 = 1

I like the theory that assistant coach Shaun Berne is there to run water and pass on Cheiks messages, and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is there to teach the special Ks how to defend in the centres.

Pretty hard to argue with a lot of that squad. A couple of selections you'd take issue with, like AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and no TPN, but the rest of it has a logic behind it.

He’s most likely holding back TPN to have a look at other options. Like Pocock TPN is a known quantity and there is no point risking him. Time to see if Uelese is up to it.
I would not have Latu anywhere near any Wallaby squad. He is a serial card puller right now. Could be the difference between losing a quarter final and having a shot at winning the RWC.

I think considering KHunt, Petaiai, JOC (James O'Connor) and Folau are all out of the current selection frame, a guy like AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) gives you good backup at OC plus back 3. Who really missed out because of this selection? He probably wouldn't be in the frame with everyone fit and available but you know he'll do a decent shift.

Likely JOC (James O'Connor), Petaia and Hunt come back into contention for the next round of selections and I'd expect AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) might be moved on then.

I'm struggling to see Lukhan at 6 with Naisarani at 8.

I would have seen Lukhan at 6 with Mccaffrey at 8, or Jones at 6 with Naisarani at 8. Utility Dempsey on bench.

I reckon Petaia is a huge chance to come into the RWC squad in place of AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) if he can prove his fitness in time.

There are 15 backs in this squad and I think we'll take 13 or at most 14 to the RWC so you're still looking to cut two others. I reckon Hodge/To'omua/Banks/Maddocks won't all go to the RWC.

Will stroll in me thinks, and be the back up 13 or starting wing. The outside back talent is grim.

Presumably he starts playing club rugby as soon as possible. Our last test before the RWC squad is picked is 17 August. If he's not good to debut by that game could he be selected?

Could they opt to pick him in the squad and debut him against Samoa in our final warm up game? It would be a huge call given he is returning from a serious injury that has pretty mixed outcomes.

Wasn’t Petaia supposed to be running this week? Very tempting to rush him back but at the same time we don’t want to fuck up his foot seeing as he’s basically a slated Wallaby for more than the next decade.

Lisfranc injuries are grim- hopefully he hasn't torn the ligament itself and only fractured some of the metatarsals.
