Was the scrum a weapon Adam? Did we get penalty tries? Did we win opposition feeds, and extract penalties?

That was the point, in spite of the scrums being very good as written.

I don’t want to have an obtuse argument mate.

In summary, Stiles is a glorified scrum coach.

Obtuse argument?
Let’s be clear, just because someone disagrees with your opinion doesn’t make it an “obtuse argument”, when you disagree with someone else I don’t see you labelling your own comments ‘obtuse’. Youre also not obliged to engage in an argument with someone simply because they disagree with you, just acknowledge that other people have different opinions and move on. You’re in an Internet forum, people will disagree with you, it doesn’t make their points or opinion stupid or any less valid then your own. If you’re looking to avoid an argument, then stop using patronising language when addressing others

Now to move on too the actual subject, yes the scrum was very strong in 2016, yes they did win penalty tries and tight head scrums. If you dig up the statistic for ‘scrum penalties forced’ for the 2015 season, you will find the Reds were near the top of that as well.

I asked you nicely & everything and still you wrote me a 200 word side quest about forums.

Have I kicked your dog?

It’s not for me to dig up statistics that support your assertion Adam.

I will say it again, Stiles is a glorified scrum coach.

You asked whether they earned penalty tries or forced penalties, I provided you the evidence. why so unhappy?

I don't wish to argue with you mate, I afforded your the courtesy of taking time to explain my reply and I have no issues with you Bobby, I'm happy to engage in discussions even when our opinions differ.

You didn't ask nicely, you insinuated I'm obtuse because I disagreed with you. I don't mind if you act like a dick, but don't pretend you aren't.

Bizaar.

The two contributors on this site who right now I respect the most. Neither is likely to back down.

Guys, can I say, we get it. Both. And I for one appreciate your posts.

And I love your posts. Simple.

I'm just glad that Cheika played his entire squad so they each got their appearance fee - it was after all , all about the money

Someone on twitter highlighted the fact that Aus rugby has been in a steady decline for a number of years and the last few Aus Coaches success rates highlight that with each one getting a worse rate than the last

Causation vs correlation...
What’s the dependent variable in this decline, the players or the coach.

Or reverting to our mean

Sorry mate but this is just a convenient argument to excuse poor coaching, Cheikas game plans was worked out by the opposition 3 years ago and he arrogantly refused to acknowledge that or adapt.

Yes Australian rugby has declined, but that declined has been expedited and amplified by poor coaching at the wallaby level, the coaching staff need to take responsibility for their part in this decline.

It is deeper than just the Wobs, the Super Rugby sides have been in decline as well, the Wobs coaching staff shouldn't need to develop players or skills, just add a bit of polish.

Too many units are getting to test level without the ability to tackle, kick with both feet, pass both ways, run at holes, throw a ball into a lineout, accurately cleanout or work off the ball. And most of them have been in programs since they were 18 or before.

Shit we have Beale hand grabbing in defense, he wouldn't have made reserve grade in the NRL doing that rubbish, he would have been in the sand pit for months every day until it was second nature

FP, it's true that a lot of those skills seem to have been missing or deficient in players coming into the test side for many years now. But how in hell can a national coach construct a game plan if the players can't execute it due to skills deficiencies? I would think that the coach has an obligation to address those deficiencies where they impact on the way he wants the team to play. After all, he is also the one selecting those players with their deficiencies. I don't think it would be too hard for the coaching staff to drill into their players the need for accurate (and timely) passing, commitment to the tackle etc. Of course, there would be no incentive to do anything about kicking skills when the game plan avoids kicking at all costs.

Of course, we can't discount that the ability to run up sand hills with restrictive breathing apparatus might somehow be the one skill that can bring home a RWC, despite the evidence to the contrary.

Japan could easily role out the same excuses, but they don’t. Japan is evidence of what quality coaching can do in bridging the gap between inferior club competition and test level.

Japanese players aren’t world beaters at club level, many of them looked completely outclassed in super rugby, yet many of the same players under the right coach at test level, look like a well drilled side who have team cohesion, who have belief in a game plan which suits their strengths and attacks the weakness of the opposition.

Besides the win against the all blacks in Perth and the 2015 RWC, I’ve rarely seen the same from the wallabies over the past 5 years.

Yep, we aren't very good and haven't been for a while

We will get to see if it is the coach or the cattle next season (I personally think it is a bit of both)

Absolutely it’s both, yet whilst the players get selected and dropped on form, the coach remained constant.
