It's certainly not a good thing for the Wallabies that he'd retired... right now he would be an automatic bench selection, or possibly playing at no. 8 with Palu injured...

Operating on reputation? Hodgson was breathing down his neck?

all are superior 7s and the type of leadership waugh brings is losing leadership

I want Waugh in the Wallabies he should have toured & captained the dirt trackers. Waugh also should have played off the bench in Sydney.

Deans should have known the boys would be fucked after two games on the highveldt & someone like Waugh would have been brilliant for the last 20 minutes.

The three major things lacking this season are go forward, mongrel and defensive strength (ie dominant tackles), TPN and Palu both continually make dominant tackles and give go forward, though Moore has played well I still think TPN is my pick and Palu is a frikkin' bowling ball against the defensive line, you don't have to rely on Sharpe. You can't tell me QC (Quade Cooper) wouldn't have a field day with that sort of go forward. Assuming he still can play at the same level, we may never know in time, Vickerman was always a better player than Sharpe. Higgers can play 6,7. He has the mongrel, and speed to be an international. I agree with the arguments for Waugh leadership, but he might have been slowed by injury late last season. But I rate Higgers as a bigger upside, and very surprised to see so little of him in EOYT.

And having only played a few games back there this year looked solid against one of the best scrums in the world...

Outside of the scrum he's the most athletic prop in the country...

Yeh, he was good LAST year, but seems everyone has caught onto him now. As for this year, my memories of the scrum this year is collaspe, penalty, collaspe, penalty. Isn't the job of the TH to hold the scrum up?

As for athletic props - this has time and time again be shown to be a pointless advantage in crunch test matches for the Wallabies. And recently too. Win a scrum first and then you might earn the right to provide the team with another skill.

And as for Waugh - He is the best Australian Super captain. He is the hardest player in Australia without question. He is the most experienced backrower in Australia. Is part of the best Australian Super scrum. Knows how to win games. I'm pretty he is more useful on the bench than Hodgson who is a journey man if I've ever seen one.

I just can't see Vickerman making it. He's returning near the end of the S14 season, and hasn't been playing at a high level of rugby consistently for years.

BTW, you can draw parallels with 2007. Vickerman came back from injury at the end of the S14 season. At the WC, Vickerman was way underdone, and in fact was probably close to the worst player on the park in that infamous QF v England.

Sorry, but at Vickerman's age and with his prior history, he is next to no chance to be up to the level required by the Wallabies.

I also have a view that's probably around the minority, like RR - Vickerman is a bit overrated. I think that Vickerman was a very good player, but not as great as many seem to fondly remember him.

You do realise Alexander has only played 4 games at TH this year with the first being against NZ in Honkers?

And already he's holding up his side of the scrum pretty well...

Agree with most of that Ash, but I thought he was bloody good for a couple of years and he had a bit of mongrel. He was very ordinary in the last RWC and will be at long odds to be included in the 2011 squad.

I see his value mostly as a lineout guru for the Tahs and maybe playing a bit for them in 2012 as well. Someone like him will be invaluable for the nurturing of Douglas and especially the younger Peterson.

And young Cummins. He's now got some sort of contract with the Tahs.
