WA Premier Grade 2024

Interesting format.

Was there always 11 teams? Bye rounds suck, so I imagine they're best avoided.

There have been more teams (eg ARKs, Curtin, Rockingham, Mandurah) who struggled to field teams as required.
Need to grow the game so can move into larger Div 1 and Div 2 with promotion/relegation between the two - and avoid byes.
The broader WF squad could then play in Div 1 as Div 2, at the moment, just aren't good enough. (But not a popular viewpoint in the West).
Last years ladder says a lot when you look at the gap between 6 & 7.
Points (55 v 40) and points difference (+188 v -250).
It's not going to be popular as Nedlands was last year's No 7.

After 13 Rounds,Palmyra appears locked in but there is still plenty of competition for the 2nd spot in ConfA.
Top two spots in ConfA go straight to a semi-final.

Top 2 spots in ConfB look settled.

3 more rounds to go before Finals.

If only the finals were that simple.

B1 and B2 play each other and the winner plays the semi against A1

A3 plays A4 with the winner to play A2 in the Semi.

And if you though that was complicated Here it is with the promotion and relegation highlighted.

Reserves and Thrids are even worse. Conference A and Conference B follow Prems. However only the top three from each pool go through. In both grades, Conference B has the bottom two teams from before the split, with 3/5 going through from that conference and only 3/6 from conference A

Yep absolute shambles and they obviously didn’t model likely outcomes

Look at 3rd grade for example, a team is going to finish 4th in division A with way more points than the team finishing 3rd in division B and not play finals, plus they have had to play against stronger teams. No fairness there

G'day TBH, I may not be 100% correct but it appears that for some time RugbyWA has been encouraging UWA to show some level of commitment to having Junior/under-age teams in order to grow the game in Perth. I understand that currently there are large differences in the number of junior players in each of the 11 x Premier Grade clubs. There also appears to be ongoing concerns about too many teams in the Premier Grade competition. 11 is probably too many cosidering the total number of players in Perth. The current "system" seems to be the result of trying to address this matter. As the ladder shows there are large discrepancies in the quality of the game being played across the 11 teams - with some large point differentials getting close to the end of the season. Even Brisbane has only 9 teams in the Premiership grade. Shute Shield has 12 but many more players. Over a number of seasons there may be a move towards 2 Divisions in Perth with fewer teams in Premier Grade but a clear opportunity for relegation/promotion between the two.
