So all results went the way you would predict yesterday.

Looking at the whole system a bit closer the finals format is a complete and utter joke. Seeing the VRU wanted a 9 team comp they really should have a 4 teams finals format. Having more teams make finals than mis out just devalues the season and the results.

Been that way for years mate, final 5 is good as it rewards only one team with a week off. ACT have a final 4 out of a 7 team comp...

As the results went as predicated this can only mean hard work for Souths!

Four team finals system can give a team a week off to.

Week 1
Game 1: 1 v 2
Game 2: 3 v 4

Week 2
Winner of Game 2 v Loser of game 1

Week 3 (Grand Final)

Winner of game 1 v Winner of week 2

Looks like Footscray v Souths this weekend might finish Souths off if they lose. They are currently 5 points behind House and Foots.

Quins v House as well should be a good game to watch.

Interesting run to the finals. Rams and Melbourne both have pretty tough draws for the final 3 games of the season.

Footscray v Souths was an enjoyable game to watch on Saturday. The lead changed hands twice in the last 8 minutes and the last 3 minutes meant Souths had to hold onto the ball. They shut the game out quite well.
The ladder now looks like this:
1st Harlequin 15 2 11 2 503 220 9 61 228.64
2nd Moorabbin 15 2 10 3 485 246 11 59 197.15

5th Footscray 15 2 8 5 423 234 7 47 180.77
6th Southern Districts 15 2 5 2 6 424 352 10 46 120.45

9th Box Hill 15 1 14 173 796 1 5 21.73

Top spot to be decided this weekend. Quins v Moorabbin will be a great game to watch I think.

Souths will be chasing 5 points and a big win against Box Hill to improve their percentage. Footscray will also cashe 5 points against Uni.

Melbourne see to be able to decide who makes the 5 with the next two weeks, v House and v Souths.

Personally I love how close it is this year.

Moorabbin to take top spot, Quins aren't all they are made out to be. House must be sweating a strong finish, they can knock off Melbourne but just need to show on Saturday as the Doggies did last week...Souths are the ones to miss in my eyes, can't see them beating Melbourne.

You might be right, all I know is come next week it's going to be really interesting to see who makes it. Looking down the grades though we could be in a point were the same two teams play off in all 3 grades on semi final day if the results go the right way for it. That will be just a fantastic day of rugby if that's the case.

The pressure, atmosphere and banter that will happen there would be awesome to be at.

Southern Districts have come agonisingly close to victory over top of the table Harlequin in Round 16 of the Dewar Shield.
The Pirates, who currently sit in sixth place, two points out of finals contention, went down to Harlequin 36-37 at home.
Harlequin opened the match with a blistering first half, taking a 12-27 lead into the break, however an improved second half effort from the Pirates saw them take a two point lead with less than a minute on the clock.
A maul penalty against Southern Districts in the closing seconds saw former Wallaby and Quins inside centre Lloyd Johansson take the match saving kick to record the 36-37 win.
Sakaria Noa, Rebels full-back Jason Woodwood, Rawiri Garmonsway and Barry Tehiko were best on ground for the pirates, while Sione Taufa and Olajuwon Noa joined Johannson amongst the best for Harlequin.
A win to the Pirates would have increased their hopes of a finals campaign, with fifth placed Power House also losing on the weekend, going down to Moorabbin 19-42.
Power House, who sat in fourth at the end of Round 15, were no match for the second placed Rams, scoring three tries to Moorabbin’s 6.
Shannon McLachlan, Shane Kilgour and Steve Kemd all stood out for Power House, while Filli Leatu, Ioane Perenise and Lualua Vailoaloa were best on field for the Rams.
With the losses to Power House and Southern Districts, Footscray have climbed to fourth on the ladder, after a narrowly defeating Melbourne 18-21.
Both teams crossed the line twice for a conversion each, with fly-half Martin Naufahu proving to be the difference kicking three penalty goals for Footscray, to Melbourne’s two.
Maika Tuinasavusava and David Palu both stood out for Melbourne in the loss. Ben Filipo, Perenise Nikolao and Keisuke Yamada were best on ground for Footscray.
The battle for fourth and fifth position on the ladder, and a place in the finals remains tight with three points separating fourth placed Footscray on 51 points and sixth placed Southern Districts on 48 points. The coming weeks will prove to be critical for the three clubs, all fiercly vying for a spot in the finals and a go at the Dewar Shield.
This week’s match of the round was played between Endeavour Hills and Box Hill. Box Hill was unsuccessful in their campaign for their first win of the season, going down to the home side 37-0. Highlights from the match of the round can be viewed on “Rugby Time”, at 9pm tonight on Channel 31.

They play for the Lewis Leamoanu cup, named after a player who was tragically killed last year. It's an important day for both sides and usually creates good matches between the two sides.

I understand that it's a big day for the 2 clubs, but you have to think their is 3 games with Finals aspirations riding that would be better off being game of the day.

Showing a match is about promoting good rugby, having the worst 2 teams of the season as match of the round really does not promote the game in a positive manner and make for good viewing TV.

Heading out to Quins now, I agree with pablo, think the Rams will be too strong today. No one has really matched Harlequins out wide this year, but Moorabbin have the back line to roll the this afternoon. Just hoping the weather can hold. Power House will be wanting to stay up with Melbourne and if they can't sneak a win will be desperate for the bonus points.
