Unlikely but it'd be a good kick up the rear for some....does raise the debate of whether or not Souths should field their grades in P1-3 or leave the Navy as their 3rds? Maybe their 4ths are too social to commit.

I was thinking more Boroondara or Endeavour, maybe even Box Hill.

In 2013 I'd like to see 4th and 3rd grade both be 8 or 9 teams with a BYE rather than a 10 team league and a 6 team league.

I'm a fan of clubs having to hold their own in the grades, but realistically you are going to have to keep it as is whereby you have P1-3 with a certain amount of clubs (8 or 10) fielding 3 grades, then a make up competition for those that can field an extra team.

If you start chopping and changing it so that, for example, EH's 3rds play in the P4 comp then you are left with a hole in the P3 comp...

Country grade has it.

Speaking of the Country grade, some growth here would be nice. Seeing Echuca & Shepparton reform for example.

Agreed, with the advent of the Rebels the VRU can't just rely on communities just forming clubs by themselves. Leadership must be shown.

Both the Latrobe Valley and the Mornington Peninsula have no club.

Footscray v Moorabbin looks like a cracker of a game, the Doggies touched up Box Hill in trials easily...heard it was 60+ points. NOt sure how the Rams have travelled in preseason but they won't hold back I bet!

Agreed. I love seeing another Vic club (Footscray) get their shit together but I hope Moorabbin win as they always have the highest percentage of born/bred players of all the competitive 1st Grade sides.

I live in the Latrobe Valley and other than the Rebels paying Tonga here last year and a league team years ago, rugby is invisible. Not only that, the school I teach at won't even allow the students to play as it's apparently too dangerous.

For me to play, I still commute to Melbourne each weekend and can't train. Annoying.

I applaud the effort mate.

I heard there a big PI community down there, surely you blokes could find 25 players and a patch of ground to start a club if you were given the tools.

As for the school that's insane. In the Melbourne schools there's still a bit of the mindset that rugby is a bloodsport but it's slowly changing, I'm sure it will for you too.

There was a guy on a thread not long ago looking to start a club down your way...can't for the liffe of me remember where he was looking to start but I know he was taking his boys to EH to play.

Round 1 results from yesterday were Doggies over Moorabbin, Souths over BH, House over Uni, Quins over Boorandara and Melb over EH. Just going on results those first 2 games looked like they would have been good games, other 3 seem a bit one way traffic.

Was at the House/Uni game, Uni were up for it in the 1st 10 mins but fell off when House stepped it up, 4 tries before the half and could have had a fair few more in the second apart from a few drop balsl and passes going astray. Referee was miles behind play so not sure how he saw half of the things he blew both sides up for!

Cheers mate. It's so hard finding results sometimes. I proposed a method to fix it a few years ago, no one listened.

Usually up on Saturday night on the VRU site...depends on when clubs ring them in. Ladders will get updated by about Mon or Tues.

My tips for the weekend in bold.

Melbourne Uni v Box Hill
Moorabbin v Power House
Southern Districts v Boroondara

Both Quins v Melbourne and Moorabbin v House will be cracking games in my opinion.

This is the write up from the VRU site:

Matches and locations for Premier Division this Saturday 21 April are as follows:

  • Southern Districts v Boroondara at Riviera Reserve, Seaford
  • Harlequin v Melbourne at Holmesglen Reserve, Ashwood
  • Melbourne University v Box Hill at HG Smith Oval, Royal Park
  • Endeavour Hills v Footscray at Frog Hollow Reserve, Endeavour Hills
  • Moorabbin v Power House v Melbourne Uni at Keys Rd, Moorabbin

Please note Premier 1 matches commence at 3.10pm.

Round 1 winners were Melbourne, Southern Districts, Harlequin, Footscray and Power House. The match of the Round this week is Harlequin at home against 3 time premiers Melbourne. This should prove an interesting game in terms of an early season measurement of Harlequin who will need to stand up and be counted against the Melbourne Juggernaut. Both teams are coming off comfortable victories in last weeks matches against Boroondara and Endeavour Hills respectively. Melbourne deserve to start firm favourites in this clash.

Power House, last season’s runners up, will be playing against Moorabbin who were disappointing in last week's loss to Footscray. With the match at home Moorabbin will lift for this one and make a good contest of it but Power House is expected to make it two wins in a row.

In other matches Souths should defeat Boroondara at home, Footscray, playing well is favourite to defeat Endeavour Hills at Endeavour Hills and Melbourne Uni and Box Hill are expected to make a close tussle of this game with Box Hill slightly favoured over the students
