MELBOURNE AND MOORABBIN - HAROLD MITCHELL CUP
The first half of the season for the Dewar Shield has been completed. The top two sides are undefeated Melbourne and Moorabbin who came through to grab 2nd place with a percentage boosting win over Boroondara. South’s, which had held 2nd place up to Round 8, lost to Melbourne, narrowly missing out on a bonus point which would have retained 2nd place for them.
Melbourne and Moorabbin will now compete for the Harold Mitchell Cup, which is the half-way Premiership, to be played as the Curtain Raiser to the Rebels v Reds match at AAMI Park on Friday 29 June. This the second year of the Harold Mitchell Cup, named after the Chairman of the Melbourne Rebels, who will be present to present the Trophy to the winning team. In 2011 Melbourne defeated Harlequin in a tremendous game to be the inaugural winner.
The Harold Mitchell Cup match remains a competition match and it brings together the two teams as part of the fixturing for the second half of the season. To allow this to proceed the VRU will switch Round 11 with Round 14 for all matches in each grade. Moorabbin will host Melbourne in the lower grades on Saturday 30 June

Well done Moorabbin, have come a long way since last year's semi final.

Some teams chasing wins vital this weekend...7 teams, maybe 8 starting to pull away. Going to be a very interesting race to the end, like last season a good/worthy team is going to miss out!

Box Hill definitely need to lift, they usually start well (lead at half time in most of their games) but fade in the 2nd half and lose which is the complete opposite than last year.

Footscray were unlucky to miss out last year but they seem to be the business this year.

House just are so unpredictable it's not funny, same with Quins.

Melbourne to go 4 in a row I would imagine, no one can stay with them when they lift in the last 20 minutes.

Melbourne still undefeated.

Do you think it is a case of playing for finals and hoping Melbourne have an off day? Or go the way of their 2nds last season? Honestly they are well and above the group.

2nd - 7th are all capable of beating each other (see Footscray v Moorabbin result) and it'll be a race for ladder spots to get home games for finals. Uni are playing for...? Boorondara will scare teams and BH look to be slipping of the peloton. Endeavour have a few tough games coming up, might determine whether or not they stay in the hunt.

Moorabbin had 8 starters out at a funeral. This week's table:
Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against BP Pts %
1 Melbourne 10 10 0 1 406 132 10 50 307.58%
2 Southern Districts 10 7 1 2 229 174 4 34 131.61%
3 Harlequin 10 5 1 4 332 199 8 30 166.83%
4 Moorabbin 10 6 0 4 239 188 6 30 127.13%
5 Footscray 10 6 0 4 239 180 5 29 132.78%
6 Power House 10 5 0 5 206 187 6 26 110.16%
7 Endeavour Hills 10 4 0 6 210 295 4 20 71.19%
8 Box Hill 10 3 0 7 189 266 3 15 71.05%
9 Boroondara 10 2 0 8 192 365 5 13 52.60%
10 Melbourne Uni 10 1 0 9 120 376 2 6 31.91%

Interesting to see that if Footscray had got a 4 try bonus point against Moorabbin they would've gone from 2nd to 5th. That's how close it is this year for the rest of the finals spots.

Definitely a case of playing for the finals spots and hoping Melbourne trip up. What seems to be a bit of an issue at the moment for them is teams are staying with them for longer and longer in the games and then only when the need to are they lifting the tempo and one week they might leave it too late.

Let's hope it the GF they slip up...not many are fans of hearing that song sung so often on GF day! In any case the gap is closing, you can only have so many good players at the one club and themost of the clubs are picking up players that are able to compete.

Are the VRU serious about relegation? If so Uni could be in serious trouble. 1 win this season and players looking elsewhere already I'd imagine.

Would you call it relegation? More like restructuring.

It may or may not be a good thing for Division 2 when you think about it.

Yes I would call it relegation. That is what happenes when you get dropped down a division. Restructuring is a management word for making it sound less damaging to those involved.

If they do get dropped it is not going to be good for anyone. Do you reckon the VRU are going to let them go down? I doubt it! It'd leave a big hole in the landscape of north - northwest clubs in Prem rugby in Vic. With Northern in Div 2 there's no one to grab the players in that area that want to play higher level rugby. Footscray, House and Melbourne will benefit as they are the closest by and have been travelling well for the past few seasons.

Have there been any updates further to the 8 club comp, P1-4 etc? e.g criteria set out for clubs to work to?

kronic

John Solomon (38)
You'd have teams/players of prem quality in the 2nd division.

In the case of Northern. Those players that travel to Uni, would play for Northern. Perhaps Craigieburn might get their team after all.

Btw. I don't necessarily agree with what the VRU are doing, just trying to extract any positives from the situation.

Melbourne plays Moorabbin at AAMI Park on Friday for the Harold Mitchell Cup. The trophy match is also a competition match, played as the half-way Premiership between 1st and 2nd at that stage – namely defending Premiers Melbourne and Moorabbin. The match commences at 5pm with the gates open to the public at 4.55pm.

The Harold Mitchell Cup promises much as a spectacle, because of the big stage and the desire for both clubs to perform well. Melbourne will start clear favourites because of their undefeated form leading up to the match and the confidence which goes with it. Moorabbin on the other hand are aware of the occasion and realise the hurdle it faces to topple the Melbourne juggernaut. It is these type of occasions which often bring the best out in players and Moorabbin will be playing for an important reason called club and personal pride, a well-known upset ingredient. It is hard to go past Melbourne for a victory but the match may turn out closer than some would expect.
The matches and locations on Saturday for Rd 11 of the Dewar Shield are as follows:
  • Box Hill v Power House at Sparks Reserve, Box Hill
  • Endeavour Hills v Southern Districts at Frog Hollow Reserve, Endeavour Hills
  • Footscray v Boroondara at Henry Turner Memorial Reserve, Footscray
  • Melbourne University v Harlequin at Royal Park
  • Moorabbin v Melbourne in lower grades, at Keys Rd Reserve, Moorabbin
An interesting round with several clubs now needing to produce good form and achieve wins to consolidate for finals positions. Power House is favoured to defeat Box Hill but expect this to be close and hard. Endeavour Hills continues its development and are capable of upsetting South’s but will need to keep the pressure on all match to achieve this. South’s to win. Footscray is coming along nicely, happy to be quietly chalking up solid wins and should put Boroondara away. Harlequin will be on cruise control in defeating a struggling Melbourne University.

Guys we'd love to be putting up match reviews of VRU games on the front page like we're doing for ACT and QPR games. If you're interested in writing a review post it in this thread or/and PM me the review.
Thanks Sully
