Looked up Triston Reilly, and firstly how good does he look. But more broadly, how good were the inside balls at Joeys!

Wow

Good luck boys. What a strange selection at 10 though. Isaac Lucas was the standout 10 at the Nationals and has played in that spot in Super Rugby. The NSW lad while talented, didn’t stand out at the carnival. Maybe he wasn’t there? Lot of NSW selections given they didn’t even make the finals?? Must all have been playing super rugby??

Some great forwards here so the backs will at least get some good ball.

I am so excited to see McReight and Wilson. They are best mates and play at Brothers together. Could be a real bash brothers combo at all levels moving forward. :)

Even tho it’s not going to happen with injuries, etc. add Petaia, Hardy and Semisi Tupou and that’s a pretty handy u20s generation this year.

Some very strange selections in the backs. Some strange selections in the reserves. Seems that they have gone to a lot of effort to make sure the states have even selection...

Before we engage the outrage machine, let’s remember they play 3 games in 7 days, so selections will be with that I mind. This will also be our “easiest” match
Sure. No outrage machine, just questions based on form. Form should be the basis of selection. Not that is with the Wallabies!!
But strange how so few of the backs selected stood out at the championships. As I said maybe they weren’t there.

Like most of RA, not much clarity here.

Will Harrison was playing in the NRC.

I agree that Lucas is a better 10 right now but both are in our best XV in my opinion. I would guess Lucas will also get game time at 10 in the upcoming matches as we try and work out our best side.

I think it may be more they think they can get the best out of Lucas at fullback. Their coach was mulling it over midweek as to where he could be best utilised.

28 man squads are part of a new World Rugby trial, teams are allowed to name 28 players including 13 on the bench, but the coach can only use 8 of those during the game, so in effect 23 players are still only getting on the pitch.

I know they picked up injuries earlier in the year but any reason why the Brumbies pair - Goddard and Jimenez, are absent?

Should we make a match thread or tournament thread for the Oceanias and keep this to team selection chat etc?

Just don't want to spoil the games for anyone if people cover it.

Anyway, the Japanese team is here

No one means anything to me, however the esteemed Rich Freeman suggests to keep an eye on the blindside flanker:

Rugby King, Welcome to the forum.

Will Harrison was AU schools captain 2017, and contracted to the Tahs. Also played U20 as well last year and played NRC.

I think he is well qualified for the role

Aussie schools really doesn’t matter at all. Nor does whether a player has been contracted quite frankly. The question is whether they have selected the best players in the squad. I don’t believe they have. There a lot of boys selected based on being there last year etc. and some great players from the NRC/URC have been overlooked. Not to mention the noticeable even spread of states seems a bit fishy to me.

Who do you think the strange selections are?

Given we're also playing Fiji and NZ and NZ is clearly the toughest game you'd have to assume this isn't the best starting XV.

The 10,12 and 14 are strange to me, but I wasn’t at the training camp.

I must say I have been told by some ex wallaby players that the coaches don’t really know what they are doing with the under 20s.
