The Wallabies Thread

I think we would lose more by moving Beale, he plays really well in that role, I think we lost by moving him to fullback last year. There is no point moving the strength to plug a hole.

I don't disagree at all, but I do think moving Beale out of 12 and into 10 would let us use a different strength, likely Kerevi at 12 and Kurandrani at 13 (or Hodge at 13 in that Crotty role).

Not saying it would happen, but if Foley copped a long-term injury i would like to see one of the promising young 10s brought in to the Wallabies squad for grooming.

The Irish seem to be doing OK with Carberry

I'm not sure that Stewart or Mason couldn't do what Foley is currently doing (outside the Goal kicking, but Beale and Hodge can kick goal), he's basically nothing more than a relay to Beale.

Anyways, my understanding is that Carberry rotates in and out of his provincial side. Rather than hoping for another 10 to step up, we could actively shape one?

I’m no fan of Foley, but yes of course Stewart and Mason can not do what Foley does. Especially on the international stage. Right now.

Carbery plays for Leinster, behind Sexton. Of course he's going to rotate in and out, as Schmidt did with the test side. BTW, he's moving to Munster next season so's he can quit the rotation bits.

I'm not saying Stewart or Mason are anywhere near as good as Foley is, but in terms of the role he played either Mason or Stewart could do what he was doing. Foley was doing nothing more than passing to Beale. He did almost no playmaking and didn't threaten the line.

ZC we might not like it, and it seems an antipathy to what we expected from Larkham but it seems exactly what they want in a 10.

And Mason and Stewart are years away from Foley, if they ever make it that far (I hope they will).

That’s absolute rubbish. Foley is so under valued by some here.

This has nothing to do with his leadership so far as a captain of the Wallabies goes, sure he might be a good guy, but his track record with the Waratahs and Wallabies last year shows otherwise.

Why? It speaks to his character, as reported by a team mate. Why does that have nothing to do with it? Oh wait, you just want to shit on it because it's anything positive about anything or anyone from NSW? Sorry, missed your subtle point.

@Zero_Cool, pray tell, how would you suggest he demonstrates his leadership qualities off the field?

What does his track record show?

The article perfectly demonstrates Hooper’s servant leadership and shows that we only really have a very small glimpse at the leadership capacity of players. Sweet talking referees is only one part of the captaincy (and for those who say Pocock is so great at it watch how angry Gardner gets at him during the Jaguares vs Brumbies game), we never see what they are like as leaders in the change room and off the field.

His track record of storming off/ running away from referees when his team has disiplen issues, of having terrable communication with referees (although next to Moore he's very good). Hooper pleading with his team to improve their disiplen and his team promptly giving away cards because they have ignored him.
I've spoken to former Provincial and Test capitans who are appalled of some of the carry on that come from Hooper.

I'm quite sure he's a great guy, and he's an outstanding player, just not a very good on field leader, or at least he's not really shown that yet.

Don’t recall anything like that last year, what was a specific “disiplen” issue he ran away from?

He's got huge potential. He's only 23.

I reckon he'll play 50+ tests.

I tend to think he'll only play in this series if there is an injury though.

BH, I see Ned as being very similar to both of Dean Mumm and Rob Simmons. All with particular skills but not sufficiently well rounded to be able to dominate at test level. Like the others, Ned will no doubt get more test time, but I don't think he will ever be more than a fill in. Sadly, Mumm and Simmons should be, or should have been, handled the same way but imo both have had more opportunities at test level than the style of their play warranted.
