The Wallabies Thread

So tell me again how Nathan Grey is qualified to Wallabies defence coach, Wallabies 2017 was poor and the Waratahs have one of worst defences in the competition, the only team with a worse tackle completion rate is the Sunwolves and have conceded the 4th highest number of tries.

Likewise with Larkham, sure the Brumbies are on top of the conference, but it's through great defence and not good attack, the position he has been selected to fill at the Wallabies, Brumbies rank 17th for defenders beaten, 18th for offloads, 18th for meters run and 18th for clean breaks.
Winning the Australian conference is Steve Bradbury like.

The only Australian team which have shown any improvement in the past year are the Force - coached by a young South African. (In a nice little irony the team that the ARU want to get rid of - there's a metaphor there).
Everywhere else the cronies and mates hold sway.

There just seems to be a recurring theme in Aussie rugby, from top to bottom.....

Summed up for me with these two headlines from the schoolboys competition today:

Though as Braveheart pointed out on Twitter, the selection panel consists of the coach (from the ACT) and two others (both from QLD).

So while I agree there are a bunch of problems in Schoolboy selection, I'm not sure an inherent NSW bias is one.

You just might be Robinson Crusoe there Barbar. On the selections, I would hazard that most of the side had probably been pencilled in before the tournament got underway, and hat results probably only affected them at the margin. That seems to be a popular view of team selections at schoolboy and U20s level in this country.

How does that change the premise? None of the people doing the selecting are from NSW.

I would say it is very likely that the selectors have a reasonable idea of a lot of the players prior to the tournament and who they thought the best players were. How much those thoughts changed during the tournament is unknown.

Regardless of the origin of the selectors, just saying that most of us non-NSW posters will still see it as NSW bias when the teams that finished 4th and 6th get the lions' share of spots in the representative side.:(

Fair enough.........

Obviously, as we see in selections from Soup teams to test rugby (not just here but in NZ too), the best teams are not always going to get the most selections for higher honours for a multitude of reasons.............

But it seemed awfully fishy that 11 of the 20 players selected came from NSW, which was more than ACT and QLD combined.

But last year the two NSW sides finished first and second but they got hardly any in and the teams were dominated by Qld boys whose teams finished seventh and eighth.
I realise that it suits some to run this NSW conspiracy all the time even when the evidence doesn't support it

Seemingly none of those people did any further research beyond looking at the results from the championships and the squad selected and then going on a rant.

Was about what happened last year? NSW I played NSW II in the final, QLD teams played off for 5/6 (or was it 7/8) but got the largest contingent. I'm sure that affronted you as much, no? It's schoolboys rugby, they aren't picking a winning team, they pick the individual players that stand out, many of whom are played out of their normal position anyway. Looking for rhyme or reason in the process is probably a waste of time.
Although I'm sure it won't stop you.

In test rugby, I think there is always a lag in selections, but the production line doesn't miss many real test players.

We get a churn of fringe units, some "why the hells" and there is some guys kept on for a few too many games in retrospect, but it is usually as good as we have

I can't think of many, if any, real test standard players not selected.

We can consider Fardy unlucky, but they gave Hanigan the chance. I can understand the logic "give the kid a chance", but I personally don't think either are real test 6s at the moment for different reasons.

But it's such good fun QH.;)

On some other points put forward:

I wasn't really into the schoolboys stuff last year, and if as reported the Qld sides that finished down the ladder got most selections, than that is also on the face of it a poor outcome.

And just maybe, if there was some rhyme or reason to the selections, the Aussie sides might just be in the competition with a chance of winning something - all the way the the Wallabies.:(

Why isn't ruru being picked in the wallabies. He is clearly the best half back in Australia while Lowrance is injured.

I get that trolling and not contributing anything of merit is your identity on this forum, but I'll bite.

Has Ruru even been in Australia long enough? I wouldn't mind seeing Louwrens given a go.

4 years so I believe so. I'm not rrolling. I genuinely think ruru is the best option while Lowrance is injured.

Ruru has impressed me too, he's been way better then I imagined he'd be. Not Wallabies good though.

Hm, it's a bit of a boy cried wolf scenario with you and your forum posts. Hard to take you seriously.

Will be an interesting matchup next weekend with Ruru up against Gordon or Phipps. Lauwrens and Powell are the top No 9s in the Aus franchises atm. Pity Lauwrens has been injured lately.

Well who is better ? That's the thing. He is our best option unless genia or Phipps returns to form. Powell was terrible
