The Wallabies Thread

I like to watch

I think Hunt deserves to be favourite for the 15. Up until last night I still thought Folau would keep a spot in the 15, with my prefernce for him to be in the 14 jersey - but gee he was unimpressive last night, and hasn't done much that I've seen in the games leading up to last night. He may well still get picked, but I can't justify it in my mind.

For mine Hunt is in 15 & Speight on 1 wing. The other wing - DHP if he's fit. If not, not sure.
I agree with your observations on players form.
But Cheika does have his favourites, it's unlikely he will drop Izzy completely.

Would be the form back three, although DHP has to be fit again.
BUT - I think Folau will be picked, for better or worse, and I can't see him being put on the bench. I agree his current form does not warrant it, but I guess he has quite a bit of upside, if someone can find it again. I said it some weeks back, and totally agree even more with you now, that Hunt is looking the goods. Does a lot of good stuff and really adds some footy brains out there. Plus he has an apparent real hatred for failure, which is no bad thing!

It's actually a bit damning that a player is seen as undroppable. Where is the pressure for him to actually pull his socks up and do something that isn't terrible if he just walks into the test team unhindered regardless. He's been out of form for the better part of two years, made some serious point conceding mistakes particularly against England. It's time he was at rotated a bit.

I mostly agree.
It is all very well for fans to cry for only form players to be picked, but some, and I mean only some, are a class of player that seems to go better at higher levels. I'm not saying Folau is necessarily that, but his ceiling is higher than some others. The Kiwis have shown over many years that some players who go like a busted flush in Super rugby always seem to shine at International level. So I guess it is not a completely level playing field where you just list the 15 players in the best current form and pick them, and disregard past performances.
I would hope he is in the squad, and that maybe in that environment they can get him back up to the levels he was before.
As I said, at the moment, I would happily see others filling the back 3 roles for the Wallabies. But there will be a compromise somewhere - lots of good finishing type wingers, but we will need a balance, so someone will miss out. Like with 12 and 13.

What? Folau was great against England in the mid-season tests.

He was 5th in the voting for GAGR player of the year, mainly off the back of that series.

I concede he's a bit out of form, but he's one of the few players we have who is genuinely classy at international level. He's the type of guy you just pick because you know he can perform at the highest level, the type of guy the ABs would always keep in their 22.

Oh yes, I was accused of parochialism by brumbies fans for even supporting the concept of swapping one of the Brumbies LHP's back then

I was one TOCC, but that was before Mayhew was signed and has since shown his wares as a LHP. Still not sure if other teams' fans should be quite so vocal in wanting to change another team's makeup, but I'll now have a go. Reds really need to relieve Kerevi of the captaincy. It has a bad look to see him laying down the law to the likes of Higgers, George Smith and Squeaky Moore.

There, I've done it.:)

Yes, and their lack of composure at the death was telling. Higgers or Moore should be running the show. Both have captaincy experience. Kerevi is a developing player and does not need the burden of the captaincy.

Agree about DHP and Hunt, but not sure what Folau has done to earn a spot on the wing.

Class is permanent, form is temporary. Folau has been shunted around at the Tahs, and the team's performance has been exceedingly average.

I would vote for Khunt at 15, with Izzy on one wing.

Folau won't be dropped because the heads of the waratahs and ARU are worried if he is, he will take his bat and ball and go back to league or to europe.

There is no accountability for the "stars" of the game and because there isn't, we have international players with more limitations than not. These stars are paid the big dollars and are never held to account for their performance, and feel so safe that they don't feel the need to improve their game and work on the skills that are deficient.

When a coach installed accountability in the wallaby setup, he was sacked, whilst the players involved were never truly held accountable for their actions.

The ARU should have backed the coach and told the players to hit the road if they don't like it. Instead they pandered to the stars and we now have a wallaby setup with untouchable, self-entitled prima donnas.

Good players are easier to find/create than good coaches.

If Link had been a good coach, in all senses of the word, the problems to which you presumably refer might not have happened, or if they did, they would have been handled more effectively.

Are you seriously suggesting that Cheika will not pick whomever he wants to pick? Seriously?

And exactly who in the current Wallabies squad is a prima donna?

Lee Enfield

Jimmy Flynn (14)
Of course Cheika picks who he wants......that is why ended up with the likes of Horne until he was injured and no doubt Phipps and Mumm again come June.

Pick any player who wears gold who has skill deficiencies that the player appears to have made no attempt to improve. Skills like kicking, passing, jumping
Scrummaging, tackling, discipline and, catching and holding a ball passed to them.

So basically any player who is still struggling to perform the basic skills required by all players and the specialist skills required for their position.

Cyclo, amongst the purge I think you might've removed this nugget of news..........

He was selected at fullback for their opening win against Wales.

Hopefully it won't be a case of one that got away.........

If we wanted to move on from the powderpuff duo of Mumm and Simmons, who could we draft in based on this years performances?

Dane Ross Haylett Petty has been pretty good, Higgers could also play 6 though i suspect Cheika won't fancy Higgers and Hooper playing at the same time.
