The core issue of course is that SA Rugby provided Smit for an extensive interview on the very same show. This is how the media works as Barbarian says, like it or not. You don't get access and interviews like that and then dump big time very personally on the coach of that captain. Also, these panellists spend their life being generally nice about the ARU and its elite, and 'criticisms' are always very moderate and careful.

John Smit spoke very well. He may not be in very good form on the field and has copped flack for that but this interview was a very good reminder of what a great ambasadour he is for the game.

Personally I think PDV is an idiot but who are we to criticize When we have had big mouthed idiots like John Conolly and Eddie Jones coach our national side. Not to mention the big mouths on the Rugby Club. Cannon and company were out of line and they also brought the good name of rugby down with their actions. They should all apologize.

It clearly wasn't a good choice of words from either party on this issue, however let PDV speak his mind because it is rather entertaining.

Even the SA press are giving it to him, so maybe the name calling can be left to them?

And they are indeed laying into him. However, I dont see anyone namecalling from SA. Outlandish claism maybe, but no namecalling from what I have seen.

I hope PdV doesn't get muzzled. He just provides so much entertainment in that void of nothingness that pervades between games. The anticipation of an interview with him is just gold waiting for the next clanger and trying to guess what it will be.

Please for the common good let him speak.

It simply comes down to acting in a professional manne, which is surely a fundamental expectation of any commentator. You let yourself and your network down by namecalling. You might think someone is a clown and have a chuckle about it, but it's pretty demeaning to call the coach of an opposing team a clown. No class.

It astounds me that PdV is still allowed to shoot off his mouth about another conspiracy theory, and yet again it seems he will escape any meaningful censure. The likes of Smit and Matfield must surely be embarrassed by him.

He is making south africans into the sub-continent of rugby - thinking that the rest of the world is against them.

Agreed. I used to get so embarrased but the entertainment value has overtaken that emotion.

He has been censured in the past, and reprimanded by Saru. He doesn't seem to listen though. Reports out of SA are that he will get censured. He is on a slippery slope.

I agree Blue. However couldn't that same criticism be leveled at your national coach? In fact the things he says are a lot worse as they imply game fixing and other illegalities.

I didn't really agree with the appointment of Connolly at the time, but he was probably the least talkative Oz had since Smith. Definitely the least in the professional era. Deans with his PC talk still offers more than Connolly did.

Eddie Jones was our PdV and he ended up getting flicked (and rightly so). With verbals with Clive were tremendously entertaining. Knuckles wasn't one for outlandish comments, quite the opposite really.

I do agree with others calling for PdV to not be muzzled. It's hilarious stuff and the longer he coaches the Boks, the greater our chances of winning (apologies to the Bok fans here). But if he's off the leash, then the commentators should be free to get stuck into him IMHO.

Yes, but the censure clearly wasn't meaningful if he is still doing it.

I find it strange that canno gets in trouble for this, but there wasn't this much drama when JP called Bakkies a 'low-breed' the other week, and thats probably worse iin my opinion.

Whilst I personally agree with both comments it is unprofessional for paid commentators to make these sort of statements in their professional capacity. In Canno's defence his comment was made with some bemusement at what PdV said and what he has said in the past. We can't blame him for that we all wait for the next clanger and get great amusement from it.

What Paul said though went over the mark, he was personally insulting to somebody and whilst his repeated on field actions say he is a thug delivering a verbal belittling such as that with the malice he intended was unprofessional and a bad advert for Rugby.

But what really riles me is the hypocrisy to treat non-Aus parties like this with fire and heavy acid, and yet typically from this hapless panel treat our coaches and the ARU with 'may we offer up one or two timid words of advice, all the time respecting that you are doing you best, etc, etc'. Where's the bucket.

Like I said earlier, you are expected in that job to be professional and show class. Neither of them did that.

So long as Divvy keeps saying what most Saffas secretly and not-so-secretly believe I can't see him getting into any lasting trouble. Losses for the Springboks are what'll sink him, not press-conferences.
