I hate it when people who are quite genuinely speaking their minds feel the need to issue a phony apology. What is actually wrong with calling PdV a clown? P-Divvie is the guy who is making all the outlandish claims about the reffing, but apparently he gets to say what he likes (which is his right), but a commentator like Canno doesn't. I think it's ludicrous.

What a load of political shit. Cannon shouldn't have to apolygise - he has the same rights as PdV to make outspoken comments. It comes down to PdV being black and Cannon being white; it's as simple as that unfortunately.

It's remarkable though is it not that it wasn't JP who got there first. He usually cannot contain himself.

It was still a bit of a silly thing to say on national telly though. He should have known the saffas are touchy about this stuff, and to come right out and say it point blank was always going to get a reaction. You can be subtle about it, as they have been in the past, but to do it so blatantly was frankly stupid.

The core issue of course is that SA Rugby provided Smit for an extensive interview on the very same show. This is how the media works as Barbarian says, like it or not. You don't get access and interviews like that and then dump big time very personally on the coach of that captain. Also, these panellists spend their life being generally nice about the ARU and its elite, and 'criticisms' are always very moderate and careful.

Springboks spokesperson Anthony Mackaiser on Thursday delivered Fox Sports, a Tri Nations broadcast rights holder, an ultimatum they immediately apologise or no longer have on-air access to South African players or management.

"When you've got them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow."

I would add mouths to that list.

All of that is true fellas, it's how the media game is played (as much as I personally dislike it). I just like seeing someone making idiotic statements being called out every now and then. Unless of course, we just ignore them, which is a perfectly valid tactic. You can't reason with a seemingly unreasonable person.

Yes, BH, but we best be sure those panellists are reasonably consistent across the board. I have heard our coaches issue some quite ridiculous examples of muddled management speak, inconsistent assessments, and confusing PC statements re players etc, and it's quite rare that the Rugby Club gets stuck into them.

What Cannon said was disrespectful. Calling him a clown on National TV was stupid. We as viewers want to get reactions of coaches and players from various teams and insulting them will get you nowhere fast.
PdV may be a cockclown of the highest order but as a Rugby commentator Cannon should have known better.

I agree that consistency is important. Bloody hell, old Eddie certainly would have given ample ammunition for ridicule back in the day. Knuckles not so much, being a man of few words. Deans sometimes says things that make me tilt my head a bit and go WTF too.

Frankly HG, as a number of us have said before, bar Nick Mc and Kaf's quite good analysis, the whole show is a debacle on wheels and a shocking display most times for the good of our code overall.

It clearly wasn't a good choice of words from either party on this issue, however let PDV speak his mind because it is rather entertaining.

Even the SA press are giving it to him, so maybe the name calling can be left to them?

Publicity stunt?

If PDV had ignored it, no one would have known. I think about 23 people watch the rugby club.

I would have thought that coaches at de Villiers level would have had professional training in PR and media relations.

Surely he would be advised on how best to approach interviews and how to respond to leading questions etc., how to keep his conspiracy theories to himself and maybe even to think before speaking..

It must be a nerve-wracking experience for the board of SA Rugby every time a mic is put in front of de Villiers...

So, how come PdV isn't in trouble for what he said?

This is as annoying as the Boks stealing our underdog status.
