Well Flash that was a controversial day to say the least.

Have to say your Seconds really surprised me - though I understand from Rohan that a few of those forwards we'd never seen before. That was always the weakness of the sides we've faced in the past: we'd win the game through set piece, tight five stuff and hit it up around the ruck. Our blokes were a throw-together and that's why we turned over so much ball.

First Grade as always was a fairly hardcore affair. I think the ref maybe should have gone to the pocket earlier to settle things down, and I must say our new captain didn't help things with his attitude toward the ref. The captain of the last two seasons was playing hooker and trying not to intervene.

Hopefully our blokes learned a lesson from this.

Haha yeah an interesting end. Saw you running around in your hat but with all the commotion at the end I decided to get on the bus asap. Will say hello down at Waterloo Park later in the season.

Seconds were impressive in our first proper game. I got on in the last 15 or so and went to openside when our 7 got 10 in the bin for some fisticuffs with one of the Renegades' forwards.

First Grade was tight. What was the eventual ref's call to finish the game?

Our guys played Woy Woy yesterday 3rds won 36-17 (we scored a fantastic try in that game that if videod I'll be getting the guy to post to youtube so I can nominate it for totm - have to check with him ;) ); seconds went down 19-17 in a good game, our blokes came back strongly in the second half but couldn't kick goals to save themselves) 1sts went down 21 - 18 (which was a huge turnaround from our final game last year when we went down to them 100-odd to blot) in another great game. Think we will be much more competitive this year but think we will miss top four in the top two grades, thirds (if they stay together) should make the semis unless we see a turnaround and guys actually start to attend training regularly.

Both captains were pissing him off a bit I think. Just after we got that yellow card he was giving the ref more lip and the guy lost it. Basically the ref never got control of the game and rightly felt there wasn't enough respect by all parties.

Back to yesterday - Seconds had a handy win over Lane Cove which is a bit of a surprise as they're not really training much together. First Grade were down 13-nil early on but somehow took it 34-30 with our flyhalf stopping at least one try by himself (it was him versus half a dozen blokes) and scored three of his own. I'm not surprised - he's a freak and I can't believe they played him on the wing last week.

"Well, fuck the ankle" I said, and went to training.

And the good news is it held up, and I'm not quite as unfit as I thought I was! Still got to lose some weight though.

I've got a month to make good on it though before I go under the knife. I've decided to have the op on my ankle asap to get it right because it is going to affect my fitness long-term if I don't get it addressed. Surgeon says its not too bad from his initial analysis, but its best to go in there, clean out any issues, and put everything to rights.

With a 6 week recovery I should be training again by mid-July and will hopefully get back in time to make the finals.

I'm pissed off just a bit. I attended training and turned up early at the game. Lo and behold, the butterball who is getting pounded at scrum time AND wasn't at training on Thursday got to start ahead of me, despite BOTH the people picking the team being there at training. So he did exactly zero around the field and I got to go on in the second half, and he shifted to tighthead and got pretty much wasted.

For my first game back it was an decent effort - helped in a couple of tackles, covered up some rucks and dominated the scrum. I will look forward to starting next week in either Grade, because its an away game, we lost another prop to achilles damage (one the week before did his shoulder). If they don't want to pick me then, they can fuck off and do without my services.

Saw a tighthead prop bore in so far that our hooker and loosehead were pushing his arse. STILL NO PENALTY AWARDED.

Well, today butterball got another start, despite not being at training, and blokes who WERE at training got shafted. I was dominating the scrums but our backline defence was shit. I only got about 20 minutes in when a dude landed right on my ribcage and I heard something crack. Difficult to breathe for a bit but I'm OK now so it was just a combination of being unfit and getting winded.

I ran the line for the second half out of necessity and then for all of First Grade (despite not being AR qualified), while butterball sat on his fat arse and didn't even run water. I want to punch him. Really hard. Right in the face.

In any case, our seconds got ripped a new 39-12 one because of some idiot defence, and then Firsts had to dig deep in a 20-10 grind.

Donned the boots for the first time this year today. My club were desperate for a ref for a Halligans match so I offered to help out in return for free rein at the bar and bbq later in the season. Then, as I already had the boots on I trotted out for 4th grade. We are a little bit guilty of having a slightly stacked side as 2 would be first/second grade back rowers work on thursday nights/Saturday afternoons so can only play with our 4ths and we ran away with a 40 point victory. Frustrating to play at that kind of level but good to have a run even though the borrowed boots have ripped my feet apart.

my eldest has taken to the step up to Under 7s with aplomb. In his first three games he has scored 6, 6 and 7 tries.

And he's the only one in the team who passes!

My name is Thomond78.

And after quarter of a century, I am now an ex-rugby player.

Finally packed it in at 36. At the third time of asking on retirement, let me add.

Ho! for Golden Oldies tournaments from now on (aka Mini-Rugby for the Aged).

I resemble that remark!

You coming down for the World Cup in September?

Nope. Given the mortgage I'm taking on, I doubt I'll be going anywhere for a looooonnnng time... :'(

The wine is the least of my problems. And I invested in it when I could, to tide me over the coming seven lean years... :yay

Playing this week Ash?

Yeah. Will see if I am starting this week or just am on the bench, but either way I'll be there. Will see how we go, assuming we don't lose any players this week the backline is pretty handy.
