WINNING
RUGBY union’s popularity is supposed to be on the slide, so why did 5000 Sydneysiders flood Martin Place on Tuesday to celebrate the Waratahs’ maiden title?
And why did barely 500 people bother showing-up to the Opera House a month earlier when the Blues were paraded following their breakthrough Origin win? Why, why, why?

They're worried.

I'm going to write to Georgie and request that next time she refers to Sam Carter as a Wallaby noob.

Thanks Braveheart - I would appreciate you doing that for me. Careful to word your request correctly so not to offend or confuse. Oh, and capital 'N" in noob please. ;).

I blame Tom Carter for all of this!

More for the fact that some of us more simple types seemed to get a different interpretation out of the headline and article that wasn't that complimentary. It was actually brought to our attention via twitter by others including other journalists who found the the description "interesting". But no bother.
So what does Carter think about bring called a tyro?

He must be gutted by being put down with statements such as

The Wallabies rookie has already established himself as one of the toughest forwards around, playing more than 70 minutes of his Test debut with an ankle injury that would keep him sidelined for five months.

The Wallabies smashed France 50-23 in Brisbane. Carter's performance was acknowledged as a standout success, not least because of the pain he played through after suffering a high ankle sprain in the seventh minute

It's thrown around by league journos with as much regularity as the terms "boom rookie" and "boon" and "coup" when referring to recruitments.

Massive storm in a teacup by mst.

That's quite interesting... I didn't know so few people turned out for the Origin win.

Although to be fair, the CBD is a rugby zone and Martin Place in particular wouldn't be short of Rugby fans. I could see the confetti from my office. I suspect if the Origin crew celebrated at Parramatta the turn out would have been better.

But to be honest, I'd never heard of Phil Rothfield until reading this thread... He just sounds like a bitter code zealot that's upset Rugby is getting the lime-light back.

What I find ironic is that News Ltd have total rights over both Super Rugby and the new NRC, so you'd think they'd actually be trying to promote it to grow their subscription base over at Fox. Sure, they're more invested in the NRL, but they're not exclusively in control.

There is very little upside in promoting Super Rugby, whereas they make a lot of money out of loig, directly and indirectly. The Terrorgraph and similar dreadful publications are little goldmines, and the more hits than can get the better they like it. Doesn't matter to them whether the hits are from loig supporters or nice chaps like us. :)

Imagine how paranoid they are going to get if we manage to win the first Bled, though. Can't wait.

Less so thankfully.

It was announced today News Corp Australia newspapers revenue is down 18% year on year.

Wonderful news! They have done their best to piss people off over the last year, so it's good that their bottom line is suffering a bit.

Heck, my old man cancelled his foxtel subscription on the back of their North Korea rivaling bias last year and I hear he wasn't the only one, so I've been wondering how it would look when the figures came out.

Yep, Rugby has got some coverage in the past couple of weeks from everyone.

Too many people talking for the press not to.

The Bledisloe build up is already on the clutch about to go into 4th gear. Hopefully in 7 days time it will be doing 300km/h in 6th

I think your crazy to blame the messenger. Simple facts are that AFL and NRL are miles are head of rugby in terms of FTA coverage. FTA drives print press which drives FTA. Rugby didn't have that luxury, we needed the extra $ from super rugby being exclusive to pay TV. We reap what we sow.

In any event, print press is dieing and, like a wounded snake, they will likely thrash around more and more as they get closer and closer to their end. In my experience, its hard to win when taking on a wounded snake.

Oh god.. He is at it again in his new column, this time he is attacking the Women's World Cup claiming the thuggery is worse then that of the NRL.

SINNER

The thuggery at the Women’s rugby union World Cup in France. A South African girl was suspended for 16 weeks for eye gouging and a Samoan player sent off for a shocking spear tackle that was worse than anything you’ll see in the NRL.

The irony is that Rugby League could only dream of hosting a World Cup of the calibre and quality that rugby union is hosting, he is probably offended that the Women's national team is getting broadcast on TV as well.

What about that bulldogs player against the broncos on Friday night? He kicked one player in the face, then just out and out tripped another, and then head higher another and only got 10 in the bin.

It was like he was playing in the 70s.
