SARU has announced it, but do they actually have the authority to make this decision?
I thought that the existing franchises are listed in contracts that SANJZAR has executed.
I would have thought that SANZAR and the the television broadcasters would have to approve it?

SANZAR have effectively said (and rightly so) it's SARU's problem and they can sort it out. They made it clear when SARU were requesting a 6th team, that the format would stay as is, and SARU could sort out which 5 teams from South Africa were involved until 2015.

I would be pretty confident that SANZAR has listed each of the franchises in their Broadcasting agreement.
Otherwise the broadcaster would have no comfort that the reds, crusaders etc would not enter into a rival comp or some such scenario.
Leaving the broadcaster the rights to a much inferior comp than that they hads agreed to telecast.

The SARU had the opportunity to turn this into one almighty clusterfuck, and they sure didn't disappoint!

Dont agree with this part, I blame ONeil for this. He farked our rugby heart no end when Marinos and kie fell for him when they agree on the stupid S15 format way back. We never should have agree for this and should have run when we had the chance.

The King (or what they once were) were playing 2nd Division CC, the next best team was the Griquas and nobody was crying for them to play Super Rugby.

Boet to be honest, SA rules all the figures (viewers and bums on seats) to give Saru the domination to do what they want in SA Rugby. The Kings situation is pretty much force on us from a political point of view coming from Cheeky Watson and his ANC camrades.

Time for M Foley to get on a plane straight to J'burg and find some players.

Foley should be looking at Jantjes as well as having already been given Eberson. He can fit both in, and Jantjes has real talent. It won't do his Boks chances any harm because:
  1. Meyer will never choose him over Steyn (or whoever else is the reserve Bull 10)
  2. If by some fluke he does get picked its OK because SA is happy to choose its players from the overseas playing pool and would be much happier picking someone from Super Rugby because of the alignment of the seasons.
He should also look at a couple of the outside backs that Spencer has been developing. Picking the eyes out of those backs would give the Force some great depth where they are weakest.

I think they should look at the Kiwi Kimami. He's good and obviously willing to travel.

Yeah, I would imagine the Lions were listed in the broadcasting agreements. Whether or not the broadcasters give a shit that the Lions have been voted off the island is another matter.

I am glad the Lions and Cheetahs did not merge though. The Cheetahs have a good thing going.

I can't believe they didn't just merge the two sides and call them the Lion Kings.

Hopefully this may shut Plumtree up about how Australia is the weakest conference after the Kings get repeatedly worked over by all and sundry.

Probably not though.

At least the Rebs have a really good shot at gaining that elusive win against South African opposition now!

At the end of S15 2013, let's revisit the notion of who has the "weaker" conference.

By golly gumdrops, won't that be a bit of fun?

EDIT: You beat me to it, BPC.

At the same time, this will likely mean that the other teams in the SA conference (who will each play the Kings twice) will accumulate more points, pushing them further up the table.

So seeing as the Tahs no longer have a marquee player, which Lions player should they try and sign?

Elton Jantjies and potentially move Foley back to fullback and keep Barnes at 12?

Pat Cilliers is good but we have three good props at the Tahs.

Maybe they should bring Hendrik Roodt back to NSW... although he doesn't really seem like a marquee player.

A lock is probably a position we need to fill. Either that or a 6/7.
