Personally I don't see why we don't just select this as our forward pack:
1. Butler
2. Pocock
3. G.Smith
4. McMahon
5. C.Fainga'a
6. Hooper
7. Gill
8. Hodgson

We'd kill it at the breakdown!
Gill at 7 would be a good call! Poor bloke he really is being overlooked at the moment and he is playing the house down. If you put reputation aside you would have him at 7 on form.

I like Gill but would like to see him give away fewer penalties and spend more time out of the sin bin!

Also, while Gill (red and yellow cards aside) has come into good form, it's not like the other two main options at seven aren't in form either.

A fresh Hooper could easily come on and slot in the centres if required.

I would be very wary of putting Hooper into the centres during a Test match since he doesn't have any Super rugby experience there (or Shute Shield to my knowledge). He would be shown up in defence, as has happened once before.
He is best suited to implement Cheika's running game as a 7.

I think I recall he played about half a test in the centres as well due to injuries - think it was against the AB's when Deans was coach.

Yes wrong team, but as I recall.

Wilson and Barbarian are on the money. Google being my friend, I found "Australia, who played the final quarter of an epic first Test with a patched-up backline that featured flanker Michael Hooper at inside centre.
They endured a terrible succession of injuries – Leali’ifano, Barnes and McCabe were all carried off." Reference - Irish Echo, 25th June 2013.

Don't be surprised, especially with TGC running things, to see a curve ball come game one of TRC, with hooper at 7 and Pocock at 6. I have a funny feeling in my waters, that TGC isn't so much looking at who to start and who to bench, but how to get the best out of them both. Reality is, they are both better then any 6 we have in Aus, and it would allow us to carry 2 x 6 types on the bench for huge late physical impact.

I know the theme of the thread is 2 number 7's don't work, but with the different styles of play, don't all fall off your chairs when TGC names the team for game 1. I just have a funny feeling on this one.

I'd really like to see G Smith involved in the squad - whether it be water boy, kicking coach, or the team mascot, he adds value, and experience.
