Williamson was not allowed on the ground.

You really ought not to shoot your mouth off quite so freely: http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/hansart.nsf/V3Key/LA20030904029

This is actually a pretty funny parliamentary debate - the main speaker hooks into all the GPS blokes in parliament

Dan is right, there was nothin in place to stop the crowd singing waltzing Matilda...

They just weren't allowed to bring a performer onto the field and make it an official performance...

The "we" was a reference to Australia - I never said I was in the crowd.
My objection was to his sweeping erroneous suggestion that my source was a newspaper (noting that the press in NZ is owned by us - i.e. "we" - Australia - not me personally). The IRB banned the singing of Waltzing Matilda - pure and simple.

The haka is, now, wired up so it can be heard: it is nothing more than the performance of a ritual - just as the singing of a national song is.

Double Standard.

Do the players perform the song?

No...

The performing of traditional war dances by the players towards their opposition is one thing... But introducing unrelated performances of national tunes is going too far...

Should the English then bring out a choir to sing swing low sweet chariot?

Should the Americans have a country singer come out and perform songs about 9/11?

Do we allow the Scots to have a 10 minute bagpipe performance?

If the crowd want to sing the song then that's fine, but bringing out a singer to delay the game to perform a song while both teams stand around waiting to play is just dumb.

We already have anthems...

Permitting the Abs to perform the Haka is a double standard: if you are going to let them do what they want then every other team should be allowed to do what they want - bagpipes, sheep shagging or whatever.
But THEY must be respected and are above the rest of us - they are not to be kneed as we who play them are kneed, they are not to be challenged as we who play them are challenged...their traditions are much richer...despite the fact that the offensive throat slitting is a recent invention and the hakas of my youth looked something more like Lady Gaga than the current dramatic production

But our players don't perform waltzing Matilda... They stand in their kick off position and wait for it to end...

New Zealand don't bring out a group to perform a haka... They (the players) are laying down the challenge to the opposition, like Fiji, Tonga and Samoa...

Bringing on outside performers is not the same thing...

i think we just need to come up with something, my choice would be Boony leading a rendition of "beneath the southern cross" but not sure if he would be allowed on the field not being a rugby player, but then again, the kiwis are allowed Weepu for the same reason.

Seems to me like more of a theatre performance to create tension and involve the crowd. It lost it's meaning when they wired up the microphones and made it into a spectacle. For mine, it's a war dance signalling intent to destroy the opposition, so why should the crowd be involved at all? Because it creates an atmosphere and adds to the occasion, it's complete bullshit that teams can't advance and signal their intent in return.

This is so far off track: they didn't - the game commenced and the crowd and Willo sang: Willo wasnt even allowed to be miked up to sing it at that point from off the field...now frankly I was glad because it had become tedious but thats hardly the point.
By the time a stop was put to it Old Man Emu would have been better (for our younger viewers):

Let me tell you of an interview with an Old Man Emu
He's got a beak and feathers and things, but the poor old fella ain't got no wings
"Aren't you jealous of the wedge-tail eagle?" - dom ba da little da da da
(Spoken in tempo) "While the eagle's flying round and round, I keep my two feet firmly on the ground
I can't fly, but I'm telling you, I can run the pants off a kangaroo".

doo dee ba doo doo doo , boo da da doot doo doo doo
He can't fly, but I'm telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo.

Well he was the model for the fifty cents - oom ba da little da da da
The designer should have had more sense - oom ba da little da da da
If you take a look, it'll prove to you, I ran the pants off that kangaroo.

Doo dee ba doo doo doo...Boo da da doot doo doo..
Take a look it'll prove to you, he can run the pants off the kangaroo.

You can't loop the loop like a cockatoo - Oom ba da little da da da
Swoop and toss like an albatross - Oom ba da little da da da
"You silly galah, I'm better by far, than a white cockatoo or a budgerigar;
They squeak and squawk and try to talk, why me and them's like cheese and chalk"
Ba da da Doo dee ba doo doo doo...Boo da da doot doo doo doo
He can't fly but I'm telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo...

Well the last time I saw Old Man Emu - Oom ba da little da da da
He was chasing a female he knew - Oom ba da little da da da
As he shot past I heard him say "She can't fly, but I'm telling you
She could run the pants off a kangaroo". -

Ba da da Doo dee ba doo doo doo Doo dee ba doo doo doo...Boo da da doot doo doo doo
She can't fly but I'm telling you, she can run the pants off a kangaroo

Well there is a moral to this ditty - Oom ba da little da da da
Thrush can sing but he ain't pretty - Oom ba da little da da da
Duck can swim, but he can't sing, nor can the eagle on the wing
Emu can't fly, but I'm telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo.

Well the kookaburra laughed and said "It's true, oom ba da little da da da,
Ha Ha Ha Ha Hah Hoo, He can run the pants off a kangaroo"

IS, you have a short memory...

There was a period Following the anthems (and haka) the players stood in kickoff position while a miced up singer (there were various aussie country singers) sang the entire song...

Kickoff didn't commence until after the song...

Eventually this was scrapped, and rightfully so...

There was then a period when the song was performed while the game proceeded
Eventually this was scrapped....as the Haka should have been

But if I am wrong so be it - i no longer care

i get what your both saying, however the song was only waited for a couple of times from my memory, the last couple of times JW performed it, he was actually in the crowd not on the field, it started as the haka stuff was being packed up and taken off the field and the whistle went during it. your both right.

I've always enjoyed the haka as a spectacle...

Waltzing Matilda as a kind of response is just laaaaaaaaame, and it's not even the same kind of thing...

There is actually nothing to stop Waltzing Matilda being done before test matches as it was in early 90s, only at World Cups do these rule apply, so if you want someone to perform song pre test just write to ARU. These rules only apply WC as I said, in mormal test matches it is completely up to the home union what is done pre match. So it is in your own hands boys, you can help make the changes yourself, petition the ARU, and let em know you want it on before tests.

The Mods should take this down in case someone gets the idea that it would be a good idea to write to the ARU and request the reintroduction of the singing of Waltzing Matilda before test matches....unless its this "version":

No he said something very important! The home union decides what happens before a test! We don't have to have anything except the national anthems!
