The best XV of players from any school

Ah shit forgot about that, Cross played Union at school, Rogers played union at school

Lote was in Fiji til he was 15 so probably played a lot of union as a kid

That leaves big Dell, joined in 02 became a wallaby in 03. Not sure of his back story so he might claim the award

Dell played rugby during the SL wars. 1996 perhaps? Lower grade for GPS with Brad Thorn.

That was a funny story about Langford. Hadn't heard that before.

Rob Horne never played a game for his school either - but because they didn't have a rugby team. Manu Sutherland, the ARU NTS boss, saw him play at age 14 for his local junior club and the rest is history. The St. George Dragons were after him too.

Alternative elections in bold.

Scots haven't exactly played their part in producing top front rowers, have they?

3 Wallaby coaches is good going though. (Brock, Daryl Haberecht, Dr John).

We're deeper at lock. Colin Scotts could have been a monster for the Wallabies but played grid iron instead. Greg Peterson will probably become a Wallaby.

At prop, IIRC Ray Smith from the '87 premiers played prop for Warringah, NSW B and a handful of games for NSW. Scott Webster, captain of the '93 premiers, played loosehead prop (badly) for the Queensland Reds. Choromanski briefly played for NSW, so we at least have state rep talent in the front row.

Rupert Rosenblum for 10 ? He was at least capped.

A couple spring to mind: Kearns, Farr-Jones, Bill Young (I believe)

BTW - I'm hoping to post something on the blog soon (an interview with a successful coach) which touches on the schoolboy to pro progression

I thought Bill Young played 1st XV at Joeys but at lock forward ?

Quite a path to the Wallabies for John Langford then haha

probably the second quickest path to Wallaby status after never having played the game

Sounds similar to Justin Harrison...I recall reading an article about him and how he had never played at school, having only started when at a North Coast of NSW uni and discovering that the social side of rugby was very much to his liking...his words were "once I got in the turps after the match...." and the rest is history...

From memory, Waverley College should be able to roll out a 1/2 decent team.

Shit, from past experience on Sportal where there were any number of CAS posters espousing the virtues of primarily Waverley and Barker , I am surprised that no one has taken up my challenge.

Waverley Wobs: (There are apparently 18 of them)

Morgan Turinui
Owen_Finegan
Cyril Towers
Steve Finnane
Adam Freier
Ryan Cross

Bob Dwyer (coach)

I thought John Eales attended Gregory Terrace. Can anyone confirm? Surely he deserves a mention if this is the case.

No, Marist College Ashgrove.

Coincidentally, here's an Old Boys side from Ashgrove:

1. Anthony Mathison
2. Christian Knapp
3. Mick Crank
4. John Eales
5. Garrick Morgan
6. Daniel Heenan
7. Mick Flynn
8. Sam Scott-Young
9. Des Connor
10. Pat Howard
11. Brendan Moon
12. Bob Honan
13. Daniel Herbert
14. Paddy Batch
15. Barry Honan

16. David L'Estrange
17. Mick Barry
18. Graeme Bond
19. Anthony Herbert
20. Nigel Kassulke
21. Richard Graham
22. Tom McVerry
23. Paul Sheedy

Coach: John Connolly

Players 4-20 all played test rugby for the Wallabies (Des Connor also playing for/captaining the All Blacks), the rest played senior rugby for Queensland or NSW (Sheedy).

Bob Honan (brother of Barry) was a dual international who played in several pemiership sides for South Sydney in the late 60's.

Would be at least competitive against any of the other sides named in this thread, I would have thought.

yeah, Ealesy's a Grover. They'd put together a fairly decent team. In fact a team from the 89/91 era would have Richard Graham, Graeme Bond, Dan Herbert, Pat Howard in the backline alone. Then Christiaan Knaap at hooker (former Reds hooker). A team may be something like:

15 Richard Graham
14 Graeme Bond
13 Dan Herbert
12 Anthony Herbert
11 Brendan Moon
10 Pat Howard
9 Des Connor
8 Sam Scott-Young
7
6 Dan Heenan
5 John Eales
4
3 Anthony Mathison (former Reds prop)
2 Christiaan Knapp (former Reds hooker)
1

Coach: John Connolly
Manager: Ray Meagher (Alf from neighbours who was a handy flyhalf (I believe) in his day, a represented QLD)
Referee: Andrew Cole

Can someone fill in the gaps?

beat me Galloper. Except Morgan went to Downlands didn't he? Or did it go to Ashgrove for a little bit?

That is an extremely competitive side.

Welcome to Gaggerland.

Great first post.

Ashgrove years 8-10 (with Eales and my younger brother) and then Downlands.

I remember Eales breaking his hand punching Morgan in Under 19's, so even then his judgment was good!

An even better second post.

I am reminded of Rick Blaine's closing comment at the end of Casablanca.

4. James Horwill

9. Will Genia
10. John Roe (played 10 at school level apparently)

15. Roger Gould

Very slim their but considering the school was the worst at sport from inception - 1970's doesn't surprise me. It's slightly better now.

Another BBC old boy, Stu Gregory a 2nd rower of the late 60s and early 70s, played quite a few games for the Wallabies.

Big Bum

Yes - it was the start of a beautiful friendship. I used to know about 70% of the dialogue in that movie and it was one of my party tricks.

It had one of the best insults too; something like:
"You despise me, don't you Rick?"
"If I ever gave you any thought, I probably would."

And something like:
"What brought you to Casablanca?
"My health. I came here for the waters.
"Casablanca is in the desert.
"I was misinformed."

Nazi guy:
"What nationality are you?"
"I'm a drunkard."

Best line:
"Round up the usual suspects".

Most famous line that was never in the movie but everybody thinks it was:
"Play it again Sam."

...what about the best coach from those great rugby factories.

Dave Brockhoff from Scots, Bob Templeton from Churchie, Alan Jones from Toowoomba Grammar, Bob Dwyer from Waverley and Sydney High and Des Connor and John Connolly from Ashgrove come to mind, but they'd all be behind Terrace Old Boy, Frank Gaffney. Well behind.
