Amongst all the downbeat vibe from the Wallabies' current position, there is a big beacon of light for me that, in such a context, must be sincerely congratulated for its:

- quality

- spirit

- good, regular rugby analysis, in depth and of a type far exceeding the mainstream rugby media in quality and thought

- unpaid leadership and unpaid contribution

- ever-present wit and imagination of articles and commentary

- growth as a respected, globally recognised 'new media' outlet

...and that is: Green and Gold Rugby (.com).

I can only speak for myself, and whilst I've had some wild arguments here, the fantastic unpaid work of:

Gagger, Scarfman, Scott Allen (Austin), Lance Free, Mr Timms, Juan Cote, Barbarian, Cyclopath, Sully, Lee Grant, Zeno, Slatts, Bob Dwyer (yeah, man!), RugbyReg, Moses...and no doubt many others I may have missed....has, for me

...made the recent experience of and immersion in Australian rugby so much more more enjoyable, insightful and fun! I don't know where my rugby passion would be today without this fine work and these fine people (some of whom I've had the pleasure to get to know). I just must salute you one and all.

Thanks for making the fantastic effort, very few would. You've done something fine.

Next step is to get G&GR on the selection panel for both the coaches and national team!!

I nominate Slim, at least we will have consistency in our centre pairings and a Brumby as our captain!

Not to mention there will be no Reds.

Letter to the Editor of the SMH

Should this be sent? I don't really read the other regional and interstate papers but think with minor changes, it could apply to others apart from Grumbles Growden.

Dear Sir/Madam,

There are a number of rugby supporters in this country. I am one of them. Apparently the recent Rugby World Cup semi final broke Australian Pay TV sports watching records.

Rhetorically I am wondering how much you pay your Chief Rugby Correspondent, including airfares, accommodation meals and per diem costs while he is overseas or “on tour”. I do not expect that you will share this information with me, however I have done a fair amount of business travel. Assuming that you are picking up the tab for this for your Chief Rugby Correspondent, then I have a fair idea how much this is. I also assume that he is a full time member of your staff, although he may be a contractor paid by the column inch. Doesn't really matter. There is a cost there for you which is most likely not simple pocket money.

In my humble opinion, I feel that you are probably not getting value for your money from your investment in salaries and allowances in this regard. The average report is little more than tittle tattle “back of the bike sheds” gossip, much of it completely unfounded, unresearched and bordering on libelous. Other reports could be considered as rehashed press releases from ARU or Waratah headquarters. Match reports are frequently simple narratives of parts of the game, with little or no genuine analysis of the game, strategy, tactics, or performances.

I have recently stumbled on a resource that provides everything you would ever need and more from a Chief Rugby Correspondent, and a full department of cadet rugby reporters. What’s more they have almost unlimited coverage across the rugby globe, and can call on intelligent, articulate, witty and objective rugby loving correspondents following the Wallabies on Tour when necessary.

This resource is also not unknown to you as I note you have copied from it in the past, belatedly crediting the source only after one of its number recognised the uncredited plagerism.

This resource is Green and Gold Rugby (Greenandgoldrugby.com). To the best of my knowledge it runs on the smell of an oily rag, with most of work being done by volunteers purely for the love of the game. On this website/blog, there is an absolute cornicopia of rugby analysis, interesting articles and commentary of a quality that far exceeds what is available in not only your fine newspaper, but all conventional mainstream rugby media in this country.

I would recommend that you get your finance department to examine how much you currently spend on your Rugby Correspondents, and then have a discussion with Green and Gold Rugby with a view to subcontracting them to provide the column inches you have set aside for Rugby. I suspect that you would be significantly better off financially and journalistically.

Yours etc

Hugh, it will never get published but I reckon it would be worthwhile sending it because you'll hear the splutters of indignation from your place when they get it.

Good thoughts, HJ. I'd find out the name of the Ed and address it to them personally though.

I know I may be in the minority here and I agree that most of what Growden gets written off as 'analysis' doesn't deserve the name but he has a lot of inches to fill every day and I think if we had the same obligations at G&GR the quality would certainly suffer (paycheque notwithstanding).

I also think maintaining distance from the established players is one of the major reasons G&GR is as different and independent as it is.

Amen to that Jarse. Best Rugger forum IMO. Good constuctive threads, extremely few trolls.
Wish NZ had a decent one.
Huge words form a Kiwi, Print it out and frame it.

Brilliant! FFS, please, please, send it. It needs to be said, and sent. Just the very act would be therapeutic release for all of us here, suffering as we have from GG's sloppiness and mediocrity all of which is really bad for the code.

What is wrong with the silver fern site?

Very few trolls on there.

I like G&GR too.

Having landed at G&GR, my needs were satisfied and I didn't even know of the existence of silver fern site until very recently when i questioned what "TSF" was, because a number of posters were referring to "TSF" in their posts. It was obvious that it was something to do with NZ by the context of their comments, and I naively thought they may have been referring to "The Sheep Farmers" or some other variation of TSF which would be rather rude.

In my brief browse through TSF a while ago, it is a bit too NZ Centric for my tastes (f*king obvious really, similar criticism could be levelled to G&GR.)

I have enough trouble keeping up with the threads here that interest me, let alone the entire broad canvas that is Gaggerland, or other International sites.

The Minister for Internet Immigration at Chez Jarse (AKA La Jarse, AKA Mrs Hugh Jarse) has only allowed an extension to my restricted Gaggerland Visa for the period of the RWC. Would struggle to convince the Minister to allow access to other Heaven's Game blogs.

I agree Hugh, it was all pretty civilised. A few heated exchanges, as you would expect, but in general very good considering the tension.

Now that we all agree that Robbie is crap there should be no more disagreements until the Reds play the Waratahs.
