Was delighted when Gaffney left Ireland and had a few celebratory drinks when it was announced he was to step down.
Not sure how many in aus followed his career in the NH but here's my take on it over the years he's been up here.
1st stint at Leinster he was a good backs coach. Was there at a time when a very talented bunch of young backs were coming through at the same time along with some already established Irish internationals. During that period Leinster had a reputation of being nearly men. Very talented group of players who never quite lived up to their potential and sometimes fell well short.
At Munster it was a bit up and down. Some poor finishes in the league, got knocked out in the HEC QF twice, highlight was a HEC semi final which they lost by conceding 2 tries in the last couple of minutes against Wasps. Was replace by Declan Kidney who went on to win 2 HECs with Munster.
At Saracens had an OK first season, nothing spectacular. Started his 2nd season well but they fell off in the 2nd half of the season. At the time there were rumours of him being replaced by Eddie Jones and being shunted sideways into a consulting role. In the end the club was taken over by the SA consortium and he was replaced by Brendan Ventner who went on to win the English premiership.
2nd stint at Leinster he was a consultant and didn't have too much input. It was felt that as he was going to be Ireland backs coach one of the provinces could also benefit from having him available. In the end he didn't contribute too much but he did write some pretty good match previews for the Leinster website.
As Ireland backs coach there were high expectations as he had such a good reputation. First season backs didn't go so well but it was put down to players getting used to a new style of coaching. 2nd year we won the Grand Slam despite some very predictable backs moves. Many of our breaks came from pieces of individual brilliance rather than good structure or set moves in the backs. By 2010 there were rumblings of the backs not being happy under Gaffney. In 2011 the writing was on the wall for him, it was an open secret that he was to be replaced after the WC with the IRFU feeling it would not be possible to get a replacement settled in before the WC.
So in summary he's had an OK career in the NH but there seems to be a trend of the guy who follows him doing a better job. Up until he took over as backs coach for Ireland he had a very good reputation but by the end of his stint with us it was in tatters in the NH. But rugby is a strange game and he could rediscover the spark as 'Tahs head coach. I just don't believe he will but I will be delighted to be proved wrong if he does take over. The absolute last thing I'd want to happen would be to be able to say "I told you so" as that would mean another disaster of a year for the Tahs.
On a side note Gaffney was connected with situation that has some similarities to the current one with Foley and the Force when he was in Ireland. Gaffney was Munster head coach and Declan Kidney was Leinster head coach. Leinster were said to be in disarray when it emerged that Kidney was to leave them to take over from Gaffney at Munster. Leinster appointed Chieka and Kidney took over at Munster and both teams went on to great success under those coaches.

Never really heard anything in Ireland about wanting to get rid of foreign coaches. We have a very small pool of top coaches so if someone can do the job they are welcomed with open arms no matter where they are from. The attitude toward Gaffney was very positive upon his appointment as I've mentioned above. He probably lasted longer in the job than he should have because he was in such high standing in Ireland.
We've still got a few foreign coaches and they are doing a pretty good job. Les Kiss is defensive coach and he's been excellent. similiarly Gert Smal has been excellent as forwards coach. Greg Feek is scrum consultant and has made huge improvements in the Irish scrum, apart from the game against England which was more down to injury and having to play a prop on the wrong side, the Irish scrum has been pretty solid over the last few years.
The coach receiving most criticism in Ireland currently is Declan Kidney and if he was to be replaced in the future I think many would want to see our foreign coaches kept in place if they are still doing a good job.

Results in any given year don't mean anything in the long run. If rugby loses popularity in NSW, we will all lose. Especially those franchises who hang off the coat-tails of the Shute Shield, and the vast junior and senior catchment that underpins it.

It is not nice to make jokes about people with disabilities. Neither is it nice to make jokes about people with coaching disabilities. Some of the more sensitive Tah supporters will find the idea of Jones coaching the Tahs as just too distastful for words.
While the Tahs have been diabolical this year, no one deserves Allan Jones as their rugby coach.

Australian rugby doesn't specifically need the Waratahs to be successful in order to prosper (as clearly shown), but rather it certainly requires more than one team being successful.......
If the appointments, and resultant success, of Link at the Reds and White at the Brumbies have taught us anything its the value of picking someone from completely outside the system who can come in with fresh eyes but more importantly no history/links etc. I reckon the Tahs need this big time, but its going to take someone very brave from Waratah Inc to make it happen.

In light of the Foley coaching debacle, the timing of Zemancheff’s resignation is interesting. It is doubtful that he was unaware that Foley’s decision was forthcoming. Yet he left before all of it was sorted out. He should have stayed at least long enough to cop some of the heat and accept some of the responsibility for the drama. Soft.
It was reported in the media last week, that he was to front the NSWRU board. Now he dodges that as well. It reminds me of how the captain of the Costa Concordia did a runner before all the crew and passengers were accounted for. The goal of management and leadership should be to leave an organisation/team etc in a better state than when you inherited it. Safe to say he failed.
If the objective, as per the press release, was for him to be chairman for two years, whose objective was this? If it was the objective of Waratahs Rugby, why didn’t they have a succession plan in place so there was an orderly handover? If it was his, why did he leave so suddenly?
It is telling that there hasn’t been any comment out of the Tahs HQ bunker other than a couple of press releases. The CEO should have fronted a press conference, but I reckon he would be on thin ice as well since the former chairman was reportedly heavily involved in his appointment.
So the Tahs could be left without a Chairman, CEO and head coach in quick time.

The way I heard it, p.T, and I don't know if it is fact, was that the main reason for creating a separate board for the Waratahs was the fact that Messers [not a misspelling] Zemancheff and Petersen were reaching the end of their constitutionally permitted terms on the NSWRU Board. With the creation of a new entity they were serendipitously able to keep their snouts in the trough.
