Potentially.

Stade Francais hasn't exactly dominated in the last couple of years.

Stade's problems is the owner not the coaches.

We (Reds Supporters) were very happy to get someone washing out of Stade Francais and he came back and helped deliver us a Super Rugby Championship.

So does this now means the Tahs are hands down favourites for next years Super Rugby?

Here is Gaffney's record. I am not trying to say he is faultless but the record looks ok till this year. I would say Tah performance this year is down to Michael Foley as he is head. I don't know what happens behind closed doors but rumour doesn't help anyone.

I'm not saying he doesn't have a good record just that he's not exactly setting the world alight anymore. Everybody has a used by date. Ask the Irish how sad they were to see Gaffney go.

HSBC Waratahs to appoint new coach

The HSBC Waratahs will have a new head coach next season following Michael Foley’s decision to leave the NSW province.

Foley handed in his resignation today, saying, “I'd like to thank the organisation and team for their support throughout my time here, particularly over the past season.

“While it's been a challenging season for everyone, being involved over the last four years has been extremely rewarding, particularly being part of a team that was able to play in two finals series.

“I believe that the squad and organisation has the potential to turn it around and I wish everyone the best for next season.”

Speaking on behalf of the Waratahs Rugby Board, Al Baxter said, “On behalf of everyone involved with the HSBC Waratahs, I would like to thank Michael Foley for his dedication and commitment to the team and the organisation, not just over the past year but throughout his time with NSW. We wish him and his family all the best for the future.

The Waratahs Rugby Board will now oversee the process of appointing a new head coach. “We firmly believe that this position is a highly sought-after role and will begin the appointment process with immediate effort,” added Baxter.

I can't recall hearing or reading any thoughts that Foley is doing the wrong thing in leaving, or any opinion that the tah's should hold him to his contract and not allow him to go.
I can't recall a coach previously being released from his contract to allow him to coach a opposition side.
.........not that I am complaining, just a little strange methinks

Congrats to foley, in years to come his story will be told as legend. Any coach in a professional arena that can be called before his bosses and told to fight for his job, do it, only to quit on his own terms to gain a pay rise and better contract at another job has to be the greatest negotiator of all time.
I wonder if Foles showed the Western Force interview committee that photo above of wj apparently sitting on his lap in order to convince them of his popularity with the 'Tahs fans.

I think it was mutually beneficial. The Waratahs likely wanted Foley gone but didn't want to pay out his contract.

And we know how everyone adores a foreign coach.

Its what happens next that matters. Destructing the status quo is the easy part, building something better is much harder and is by no means a guaranteed outcome. There are examples of where it has been done well (e.g. the Reds) and examples of where it has been done poorly (e.g. the Eels in the NRL). Its easy to assume things can't get worse than they were this season, but you know what they say about assumptions.
